The Good

After only a month, it's great to be back to the main story. The Villains Month titles were a mixed bag and strangely has made the wait for this issue feel longer.

The first issue was a bit of a shocker. Jumping forward slightly since the end of Trinity War, we witnessed the Crime Syndicate proclaim the end of the Justice League. Actually, not just the end, they're saying the League is dead.

With most of the heroes out of the picture, it falls to Lex Luthor to prepare to stand up against them. There are some other villains that refused to accept the invitation to the Secret Society and we'll be seeing more of that in the pages of other comics. There's no denying what a magnificent villain Lex is. The fact that it may fall upon him to help save the day really says something about the state of the DCU.

Aside from Lex, Geoff Johns gives us some glimpses at other areas where the villains are running amok. We also get to see the Syndicate making plans for their next move. The little interactions between the members is what you'll want to pay close attention to. We're familiar with the Syndicate from the pre-New 52 comics but there still is that air of mystery as we see how they may have evolved in the current story. We still have some mysteries brewing (like who is that hooded figure they brought with them) as well as another bombshell we discover when two members are talking to each other.

David Finch's art is spot on here. There is a lot going on as we see different locations. The scenes smoothly shift and there is a nice balance in depicting the action scenes along with the static conversation ones. Finch is a great choice for this series. He makes the villains look creepy enough without it feeling over the top. Whether it's Johnny Quick's evil smile or Lex's secret weapon, we get some pretty impressive scenes. And of course that last page is just what we wanted to see.

The Bad

We still don't know what happened in between the first issue and JUSTICE LEAGUE #23. It's a matter of being patient so we'll have to wait. We know the League is supposed to be dead and the Teen Titans are here. What about the other heroes? We're getting a good glimpse at the entire New 52 world but we're just not sure what happened to the heroes.

The big fight here involves the Teen Titans. It was great to see why they chose to try to engage the Syndicate but the fight didn't quite go as I thought. I wasn't really sure what happened when Atomica jumped inside Cassie. You would think she'd make a big and gross mess. The way the fight ended felt too easy.

The Verdict

After the shocks of the first issue, we get to catch our breath a little to see what happens next in the DCU. The Crime Syndicate is ready to demolish the New 52. If Lex Luthor is the only hope, that should tell you how dire things are. Is there any hope left? You'll have to read and find out. Geoff Johns and David Finch do a great job creating the tone this issue requires. We get a nice mix of action while also getting some insight into who the Syndicate members are in their New 52 incarnations. We get a battle against the Teen Titans. While it's great the team didn't get completely decimated, it did feel like Johns was holding back a little.

By the time this issue ends, you should have all the reason you need to make sure you do not miss the next issue.

The involvement of the Teen Titans was just to provide a vehicle for the next arc of Lobdell's book. Pretty pointless, but that along with some of Johnny's dialogue (that line about a certain indestructible orifice) were the only things that I didn't like.

With this and the first part of Lights Out, it was nice to read two good event books in the same week.

Establishing a dynamic among the individual members of the Crime Syndicate isn't enough? They're the ones who have to drive the plot forward from here, and they need some depth beyond "we're villains, we do bad stuff".

If the story was only the heroes' perspective, which would make it a pretty one-dimensional story, your point would be right on the mark. It's not, and an event that revolves around villains had better shine some light on them.

Honestly I was completely underwhelmed by this issue. Both major stories should have been told in this month's Teen Titans and Last month's Bizarro villain's issue. I would have much rather seen the Crime Syndicate and the resistance get more flushed out. The TT bit seemed to be there just to tell us what we already know. 'These guys are dangerous and they mean business'. But besides that it meant nothing to me.

The Titan sendoff really felt like the weakest part of this issue, it was over too fast and it just seems really strange that all it took was one good shake of one Titan before all the Titans were sucked in, not the guy standing in it and not the woman that weighs about the same as two pencils, only those who had a Titan-access card :S

So question of the week: who is the Crime Society running from?

@citizenbane: maybe it didnt register at all with me because this is the basic interraction between the crime syndicate. nothing new. the same old, boring owlman knocked up superwoman and is planning to kill ultraman formula. what is this? the 5th time their interractions rely on that?

@outside_85: Probably Darkseid; the Syndicate might have failed where the League succeeded, so they never beat him and he decimated their world as a result. In the Secret Society one-shot, Ultraman mentions that something attacked Earth-3 and that the invasion turned the skies red (seems like what happened in the first arc of JL) and later the Outsider states that the Syndicate couldn't save their world.

It's actually the first. If you can think of a single other instance in DC history, even one, where Owlman got Superwoman pregnant and then hatched a plan to kill Ultraman to protect the baby, kindly name it.

It was ok pre-Flashpoint, but since the reboot all of his work seems to have inexplicably worsened.

This issue was great but I can completely agree with the bad section here. The whole involvement with the Teen Titans was kind of strange. To be honest I'm in this series to see the villains strike back against the CSA and not just the same heroes. All the Lex Luthor parts were excellent though I wish we got more from some of the other villains. I'm getting really stoked thinking about where this could all go especially after that ending.

The gist I have gotten from people that read the Darkseid VM issue was that Darkseid completely destroyed the Earths he came to when he had his prize?

Now I am fairly certain the CS sends the Leagues back to their world (which is why they arent parading the bodies around), meaning that there is something terrible there, but the world is still there. It might be Darkseid true enough, but I consider it unlikely, it's been 2 years since he was the center of attention, but i think it's too soon for them to use him again in a big fashion like this. I am sorta expecting it to be something we haven't heard about before in the New52... but halfway hoping it's Trigon.

It was neither. It wasn't even a baby. It was Brainiac after harvesting and maturing a cell from Ultraman into an organic form. There was no connection to Owlman or Superwoman.

@citizenbane: my mistake. anyway the owlman ultraman superwoman triangle is boring and played out for me. as is the crime syndicate coming in, beating the whole world easily only to be defeated later by the good guys. the pregnancy just shows how creatively bankrupt dc is.

Boo for you, I guess. The Crime Syndicate has never just barged in and easily crushed the world to the extent that they have in this story. They've never gone down the Millar route of assembling all the supervillains in one place and setting them loose. You're complaining about cliches that aren't actually cliches.

No offense, but that last sentence makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. Elaborate, please, on how an established relationship leading to pregnancy is something other than an organic conclusion, forget about it being "creatively bankrupt". Elaborate on how a sex/pregnancy drama is evidence of creative bankruptcy when drama like that has been the backbone of a major section of fiction for literally centuries. The whole thing reads like someone trying to find reasons to hate a book, any reason, no matter how flimsy, as long as it's a reason. But then again, 90% of all the times people describe something as "creatively bankrupt", that's the kind of inference you can make. It's the sort of catch-all phrase you tend to see when real reasons are scarce.

I don't think it's opposites. On Earth 3 Joker, was still a villain and Owlman was originally a hero IIRC.

Love the reveal at the end, was my second favorite section of the book. My favorite has to be the discovery that Owlman has impregnated Superwoman and is planning to kill Ultraman. Getting a close look at the Crime Syndicates interaction with one another was also nice. One complaint though, that fight with the Teen Titans was beyond horrible....

You, sir, are my hero. I love seeing someone actually make a logical argument on a forum instead of flaming.

As a native Rhode Islander, I loved seeing the smallest state take such a front and center position in a major DC event. Makes me wish we actually HAD a place called Happy Harbor.

Also, did anyone else wonder how Catwoman and Batman managed to knock in the steel door? Two people without super powers doing such a thing (not to mention carrying Victor at the same time) struck me as odd.

Did you read what i said? I said the JL, Batman is the only member you named and Cyborg is incapacitated.

Catwoman, Stargirl, Martian Manhunter, and Constantine are not in the JL, they are in the JLA or JLD.
