A Good Start
Hi. I know I haven't been very active in reviews lately, but I figured Forever Evil is the perfect time to start. I'll try and be as active as I can be with reviews after this, but I can't guarantee a schedule. Anyway, enough of my pointless rambling. How does the first issue of Forever Evil fair? Let's find out.
The Plot
Without going into spoilers, here's the best I can summarize the plot: Following the events of Trinity War, the Justice League is dead (isn't a spoiler since DC won't stop saying it). Afterwards, several super prisons are broken into, allowing criminals to roam free. They then get what appears to be coins, and I guess that's the best I can describe it. It sounds terrible the way I put it, but it wasn't that bad. It was a good set up issue, but didn't answer a lot of questions following Trinity War. It really only led to more questions, but I think that's the point.
The Good
- I like the opening scene for this issue. It involved Lex Luthor & another man who will remain nameless. Certain fans should recognize the name. I'm not sure if it's suppose to be the character or if they just threw the name in there. But either way I enjoyed it.
- The Art - I don't know who the artist is, and I don't feel like grabbing the book and looking it up, but whoever he/she is did a great job. The art in this is just really good. Not much I can say other than that, but it was still down right good art.
- I like the Crime Syndicate here. I don't know much about them outside of their appearance in Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths (which I plan to review eventually). I knew the main idea of them, but I knew very little about them. I liked seeing them here and I was able to learn a little more about them. Not a lot, but a little. Plus a lot of them (such as Superwoman & Deathstorm) have suck bad@ss costumes I can't help but like them.
- There was a huge thing in the comic where you can pull out the pages and there is a HUGE picture of tons of villains there. It just looked really cool.
- I'll explain this next part trying not to spoil anything: Very few heroes show up here. In fact, the only hero that shows up (other than a one panel cameo from the Teen Titans & about two short Batgirl appearances) is Nightwing. I won't spoil what happens, but let's just say I was surprised they did something like this.
The Bad
- Not rally a complain, but I have to ask this: Did Nightwing really swing all the way from Chicago to Gotham carrying Zsasz? Just so that way he could deliver him to Arkham? Just seems odd to me.
- Before my real complaint, I have one other thing to say: I understand the cover for the issue. It has several villains on it (the book is called Forever Evil), but why is Catwoman there? I understand Catwoman does switch between being a hero & villain, but they keep saying the Justice League is dead. Well, isn't Catwoman a member of the Justice League of America? I doubt they were being very specific and were referring to the main team called Justice League. It doesn't matter since it's just a cover, but still.
- My only real complain with this comic was not much happens. We get a nice set up for the future of the story and the thing with Nightwing, but that's it. Am I really paying $3.99 for barely anything happening? I suppose the book does its job of making me want more, but I still wish more happened.
My Final Verdict
Overall, this was a pretty good way to kick off Forever Evil. It was good, but not much happened outside of Nightwing and setting up the future story. I understand why they did it though, because if it had been jam packed with story then I'd be complaining it's moving too quickly. This was a good issue and it made me want more, so I don't have any real complaints. That'll do it for this review. Sorry it kind of sucked, but I haven't written reviews for a while and I rarely review comics, so I didn't know what to do. I'll try and work on it for the future.
My Overall Rating: 4 out of 5 Stars.
