Evan Blake, an old friend of Kate Kane (Batwoman), and the heir to the Blake fortune runs into Kate and her cousin Bette Kane (Hawkfire) at a party, where he shows off a painting by Alden Eisenstadt. Kate and Bette later respond to a break-in at Evan Blake's apartment, only to be attacked by the costumed art thief Wolf Spider, who poisons Kate and pushes her off the building. Kate survives the fall, but Wolf Spider escapes. Wolf Spider is later revealed to have been hired by Nathan Grantham to steal the paintings, as Grantham believes they contain clues leading to the fortune Eisenstadt took from his family decades earlier. Wolf Spider tracks one of the paintings to Arkham Asylum- where he's hypnotized into freeing Nocturna- and the other to the Kane Estate. After recovering the paintings, Grantham and Wolf Spider find the location of Grantham's family's fortune under a statue of Grantham's grandfather. Grantham runs his car into the statue, which falls on him and kills him. Wolf Spider escapes with the money, but ends up dumping it in Slaughter Swamp as he considers it to be "blood money."

Later, Kate runs into Evan Blake again, whose shoes have been ruined by walking through dirty water, implying that Blake is Wolf Spider.
