    In 52 BC, he led the rebelion of the Roman provinces in Gaul against Julius Caesar. Most of the area had been recently conquered by Caesar and Roman rule had yet to be firmly established. The conflict lasted several month but ended with Vercingetorix's surrender. He was held in captivity for years and finally executed after a triumph of Caesar. In the Asterix comics, Vercingetorix is a great hero.
