    History

The battle that created the Valley of the End
The battle that created the Valley of the End

This location in what is now known as the Land of Fire was not only the area where Hashirama Senju and Madara Uchiha had their final battle to settle the matter of leadership over Konohagakure. It was also the place where the two had first met when they were children. Only then it was a wooded area with a wide river. It was the devastation of their battle that created the valley as Madara was controlling the Nine Tailed Fox. Only afterward was it known as the "Valley of the End". The statues of the two great shinobi were added to memorialize the battle that was fought there, with Hashirama on the side of the Land of Fire and Madara standing in opposition. Both are posed in the the Traditional Shinobi Sparring Seal of Confrontation (対立の印, Tairitsu no In), which is protocol before engaging in a formal duel.

Many decades later, this valley served as the setting for the battle of Naruto Uzumaki, and Sasuke Uchiha. Sasuke was attempting to defect to Orochimaru, and Naruto was trying to stop him. Sasuke was victorious in this fight. Immediately after the events of the Fourth Shinobi World War, Sasuke leads Naruto back to this spot to fight it out once more, since Naruto refused to allow Sasuke to assassinate the Five Kage trapped within the Infinite Tsukuyomi jutsu.

The irony of this location being used to settle the conflicts between these sets characters is realized when it's revealed that Hashirama and Naruto are reincarnations of the spirit of Ashura Ohtsutsuki, and Madara and Sasuke are also the reincarnations of Indra Ohtsutsuki. Both are the sons of Hagoromo Otsutsuki, the Sage of Six Paths; and fought each other over the power to lead.
