Prologue. In his car, a whistle-blower scientist attempts to contact someone from the United Nations, only to discover he has been found out by his employer – and his car then explodes.
Steve Rogers discusses the scientist’s death with Pete Wisdom. Wisdom tells Rogers that the scientist worked for Nextin Pharmaceuticals, a new research firm headed by Professor Jacob Erskine. Jacob is the grandson of Professor Abraham Erskine, the inventor of the original Super-Soldier serum. Jacob’s mother was Abraham’s estranged daughter Esme and his father was Tyler Paxton, another soldier who participated in Project: Rebirth, but did not receive the serum due to Abraham Erskine’s assassination. Jacob Erskine worked under the last name Paxton until he decided to use his grandfather’s last name supposedly to attract customers because he had cracked the Super-Soldier serum and was planning on selling it to the highest bidder.
Next, Rogers infiltrates a hotel in Madripoor, where Nextin Pharmaceuticals is holding a gala for shareholders and may be meeting with prospective bidders. Rogers enters the gala dressed as an attendee and hopes to find Erskine and talk some sense into him. Rogers spots Erskine, but is taken aback by Erskine’s wife, who looks exactly like someone Rogers knew from the days of Project: Rebirth 70 years ago. Erskine leaves the gala and Rogers follows, encountering security guards enhanced by the new serum. During the fight, one of the men has an aneurysm and dies. Rogers finally finds Erskine, but Erskine wants to use the serum to cure cancer, not to sell it. Rogers doesn’t believe him because of the hulking security men and the familiar woman. Erskine thinks his head of security may be responsible, but he is then shot in the chest by a sniper and collapses in Rogers’ arms.
