    Background

This issue is the origin of Christopher Pike's five year mission. The whole story takes place before the pilot episode of the Original Series. It introduces the whole crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise. All the main characters are there from the original pilot with the exception of Mia Colt. She did not become Captain Pike's Yeoman until later in the mission so she is unseen here. There are also a bunch of new characters that were never a part of the series.

    Summary

The Crew face a giant space creature that plans to use the crew as scraps for it's own purpose. It is very similar to the Borg making them a part of themselves to make them better. They have already taken over many smaller ships and the Enterprise could be the very next victim.
