Sly Cooper is a raccoon who comes from a long lineage of master thieves. When he was just a child, his parents were killed by a ruthless gang called the Fiendish Five. They stole the Thievius Raccoonus, a book that contained all the Cooper Clan thieving technique. When his parents were killed Sly was sent to an orphanage, where he met Bentley and Murray. Bentley was the plan maker and resident genius of the group, Sly was the stealthy field agent, and Murray was the muscle of the operations.

The arch enemy of the Cooper Clan is Clockwerk, a mysterious robotic owl. Clockwerk has been shown to have hunted Sly's family line for thousands of years. In the pages of the Thievius Raccoonus, Sly notices that in each picture, there was a mysterious shadowy picture of a large owl. This hunt provoked Clockwerk to replace his whole body with machinery. In the games story it is revealed that Clockwerk spared Sly's life in the attack on his family to prove that the Cooper Clan would not be able to be great thieves without the Thievius Raccoonus. In the series, Clockwerk serves as the final boss and is the one behind the entire attack. During the whole story Sly throughout the story gathers pages from the book and learns his families techniques to beat his enemies. The maniacal owl meets his end though by Sly’s Master of the Thievius Raccoonus, and is left in pieces at the top of an active volcano in Russia.
