American twins of Thai-Chinese nationality, Qiao Yao and Ya Yao (both Qiao and Ya mean ‘Graceful’), were orphaned during an Earthquake when the front half of the car they were in was crushed by a collapsing overhead freeway. They were passed into the foster care system and somehow came into the nefarious care of a scientist, Dr. Helmut Bellohund. He performed several experiments on them, injecting them with serums of his own concoction. Unbeknownst to him, one of those serums would have killed the girls, but their Deviation gene was triggered and the girls both gained super-powers instead. The girls were recruited to join Trident’s New Alliance by Psionica and Countryman.
