Sarah Pierce is married to John Pierce, a non-powered investigator with C.O.W.L., the superhero union in Chicago. Pierce is killed under suspicious circumstances by fellow union member Arclight. Chicago police detective Evelyn Hewitt secretly comes to meet with her, saying that John was originally coming to meet with her with damaging information about C.O.W.L. when he was killed. She is also the only person who knew that John was previously an undercover member of the villainous Chicago Six. Sarah decides to trust her.

At the funeral, Geoffrey Warner, the head of C.O.W.L. and suspected by Evelyn to be behind John's death, offers his condolences and asks to meet with her later. Sarah shares a suspicious look with Evelyn, who is also there.

Warner does come over eventually and asks if Sarah knows what John was doing when he died. She says no. He offers her some money every month, off the books, as a way to take care of her. She takes it, and later tells Evelyn that she thinks it was supposed to be hush money. She's worried that Warner will leak the news that John was part of the Six without revealing that it was an undercover mission, but Evelyn says that would hurt C.O.W.L. too. They decide to concentrate on getting Arclight to admit what happened. Evelyn later gets an informer to rat on Arclight, but the DA declines to prosecute and Arclight skips town without paying for what he did to John.
