Plot
The film depicts Pocahontas in her late teenage years or early twenties, with Smith clearly in his twenties. Actually she was between ten and twelve years old during their historical meeting. The historical Smith recorded an account of Pocahontas rescuing him from execution at the hands of her father. Its historical accuracy is questionable.
The film features a theme of racial prejudice blinding people and features songs such as "Savages", sung by both the Natives and the settlers as they attack each other. The film was a box office hit but was considered a disappointment for Disney. Since 1989 most Disney feature films had managed to surpass their immediate predecessor both in terms of profit and critical praise. Pocahontas fell rather short of "Lion King" and was only the fourth most profitable film of 1995 (behind Toy Story, Batman Forever and Apollo 13).
