Nihon Bungeisha was established in January 1959 and by 1964 launched the earliest form of what became its longest-running magazine. Originally called Manga Goraku Dokuhon, in 1968 it changed its name (in Japanese but it was still read the same) to Manga Goraku Dokuhon and in 1971 it ultimately became a full weekly and changed its name to Weekly Manga Goraku, the name it has used for over forty-five years.
One of the earliest seinen magazines, it is also one of the magazines with the most long-running series, with several having serialized over 90 volumes worth and content and its longest-running excluding spin-offs (Minami no Teiou) having over 140.
Since the 00's, mainly spearheaded by the Ginga: Nagareboshi sequels that have lasted over 100 volumes (Ginga Densetsu Weed, Ginga Densetsu Weed: Orion, Ginga: The Last Wars), the publisher has serialized sequels to a number of old Shonen Jump serials including Kami-sama wa Southpaw (Kami-sama wa Southpaw Diamond), Majima-kun Suttobasu!! (Majima, Bazeru!!) and Sakigake!! Otokojuku (Goku!! Otokojuku, Shin Otokojuku).
