In the 1970s, Westad began to paint covers for the Norwegian Fantomet comic book. Encouraged by Lee Falk, whom he met when Falk visited Norway, Westad tried out for Team Fantomen. In 1979 he drew his first Phantom story. Westad continued to draw Phantom stories until 1986, after which his Phantom work has mainly been covers and illustrations for Fantomet.

In 1977, he drew the art for the short story for competition "Lag din egen tekst til denne Fantomet-historien!" ("Create Your Own Text to the Phantom Story!").

In 1989, he painted the art for the story "Deadly Cargo", the first and only Team Fantomen story that has only been published in Norway.

In 2006, he created the cover for a reprint of "Deadly Cargo" which was included in Fantomet #200616.

In 2011, he created the short story "The Environmental Avenger" for the Royal Norwegian Ministry of the Environment.

Among other comics that Westad has drawn are "Tåkehauk", "Tigalo" and "Knut Berg"
