In attempting to escape prison, Felix Faust accidentally creates a mystical duplicate; The JLA must determine which is the duplicate Felix Faust before his eventual disappearance causes the end of the universe; but Snapper knows that both are mystical duplicates and the original Felix Faust remains in jail, so the duplicates are brought to the real Faust and eliminated.
Felix Faust casts a spell to escape from jail. Felix Faust is transported to his Den of Demonology. There, he is confronted by another Felix Faust. After engaging in fisticuffs, the two Felix Fausts summon the demon, Abaddon. The demon is unable to determine which is the real Felix Faust. Abaddon warns that when the false Felix Faust finally fades away, the universe will fade away, too. For fear of accidentally doing away with the wrong Felix Faust, the twin sorcerers summon the Justice League of America. Due to the machinations of the false Felix Faust, only four members of the Justice League of America are available.
The Green Lantern is unable to determine which is the real Felix Faust, using his power ring. The Justice League of America is split up into teams of two, to deal with Felix Faust created crises. By opposing the schemes of Felix Faust, the sorcerer hopes the Justice League of America will be able to determine which is the false Felix Faust. Superman and the Flash confront a troll robbing a mail train. Though vulnerable to magic, Superman engages in an epic brawl with the troll. In the course of the battle, Superman notices the troll weakens, considerably, in the presence of industrial smoke and soap.
Superman believes he knows which is the false Felix Faust. The Flash is attacked by a leprechaun, before he can render aid to Superman against the troll. The moment the Flash has the leprechaun on the ropes, the leprechaun conjures forth allies. The Flash accidentally discovers that the leprechaun's allies are vulnerable to acorns and seeds. The Flash believes he knows which is the false Felix Faust. The Green Lantern is attacked by sylphides, while the Batman is confronted by dryads. The moment the Green Lantern has the advantage over the sylphides, he is attacked by their master, Boreas.
Quite by accident, the Green Lantern discovers Boreas' extreme vulnerability to the peeling of a bell. The Green Lantern believes he knows which is the false Felix Faust. An errant newspaper page aids the Batman in defeating the dryads. The Batman is then confronted by their master, Cernunnos. The Batman discovers that Cernunnos is vulnerable to goldenrods. The Batman believes he knows which is the false Felix Faust. Superman and the Flash confront one Felix Faust, while the Batman and the Green Lantern confront the other.
Each team believes their Felix Faust is the false one. The Justice League of America believes the false Felix Faust's magics were weakened, by elements of the spell that allowed Felix Faust to escape from prison. Unfortunately, both Felix Fausts' magics proved to be weakened. The Justice League of America's mascot, Snapper Carr, arrives. Carr declares that both Felix Fausts are false. The true Felix Faust is still in prison. The Justice League of America confront Felix Faust, at the penitentiary. Felix Faust unmakes the false Felix Fausts, saving the universe. Felix Faust swears that he will, one day, successfully escape from prison.
