    Before his next mission to bring in an outlaw gang, Jonah Hex stops in a saloon where a Japanese man is being harassed by the locals. Jonah ends up siding with the Japanese warrior, and the two end up mowing down the hostiles and wrecking the bar before taking flight.

    It turns out the man's daughter was kidnapped by the same gang Jonah is seeking. He makes Hex promise to aid him or kill him should he fail.

    The cover of Jonah Hex Jonah Hex #39 - The Vow of a Samurai made me a little wary. While the title has been pretty fair in it's presentation of Native Americans under writer Michael Fleischer's run, would it get Japanese culture right? Not if the dress of the samurai on the cover was any indication (bright colored Chinese style daopao robe, leggings, high yellow boots).Fortunately, the story within, while far from perfect, was pretty good for its time.
