After being wounded by the Viet Cong during the Battle for Firebase Bravo, the heat of battle triggers his "Pied Piper" mutant powers. Dune's enemies cease fighting after he yells for them to stop. Dune guns down his assailants and eventually wins an award for his bravery in combat that day. When Dune returns to America after the his tour in Vietnam, his political aspirations seem to be halted by a double cross by New York City's mob boss. Johnny Dune uses his powers during a concert in Prospect Park, which eventually lead to his mind control of a mob, which includes The Atom, Green Arrow, Black Canary, and Batman. When the mob gets louder than his own voice, they riot on their own and the good-natured Dune commands the crowd to turn their attention on himself instead. Batman then carries the critically injured war hero to the emergency room. Surviving the mob's agression, yet now powerless, Johnny Dune still pursues a career in politics the honorable way.
