Greenland is the largest island in the world and has the least population density. Geographically it is part of North America but was colonized by Europeans (Icelanders and Norwegians) back in the 10th century. The original settlements succumbed to famine by the 15th century. An attempt by Portugal to colonize it c. 1500, proved short-lived due to the effects of the Little Ice Age. Denmark started colonizing the island in 1721.
In 1931, Norway established its own settlements in previously uninhabited areas of Greenland. Its territorial claims to Greenland were rejected by the League of Nations in 1933. In 1940, mainland Denmark was occupied by Nazi Germany. Greenland severed its ties with the occupied country and opted for self-government during most of World War II. It established trade relations with Canada and the United States.
Following the War, Greenland negotiated for increased autonomy. Its colonial status was liften in 1953. Greenland became a part of the Kingdom with its population having representation in the Danish Parliament. In 1973, Denmark entered the European Economic Community along with Greenland. Greenland was given home rule in 1979 and used it to withdrew from the Community in 1985. A referendum in 2008 decided for further self-government for Greenland. Its new status started in June, 2009. As of 2009, Greenland has control of its own police force, coast guard and courts. Its only official language is Greenlandic, Danish removed from schools following the end of the 2008-2009 school years.
