The Wolves and the Elves must pool their strength together: they are hungry and beleagured after having their holt burn down in a forest fire, and after having wandered through a network of Greymung's tunnels.
Now, Cutter and the Wolfpack faces the heat of day, and an endless desert. Redlance, already injured by the humans faints during the Wolfriders's journey. He is left with Nightfall while the elves continue their desperate trek towards a ridge of distant hills.
When Cutter leads his band to the ridge, he is suspicious of a tribe that he finds, and so resolves to steal the water and provisions, that the Sun Villagers might have freely shared. On his assault, he inadvertantly captures one of the village maidens, called Leetah.
