A club of man of letters and penniless artists that gathers at Pfaff’s, a beerhouse in Manhattan, is targeted by a demon from the Black Dimension— Varkendal, the soul collector. Our story is set in the 1850s, when young writer Willy North, fan of the late Edgar Allan Poe, finds in a Seneca Village junk shop a mysterious black mirror where a strange djinn – a “genie of the mirror” – is said to live. After North’s suicide, the artifact comes into the possession of Fitz-James O’Brien, Irish adventurer and writer of fantastic stories, and then falls into the hands of each of the members of the club, all of them encountering an untimely death... The only one who could save them is the person that the demon chose as a guide through the multiverse, the man who unwittingly guided him to the old Manhattan: Harlan Draka, the dampyr!
