    Origin

The Covenant is a Theocratic Hegemony made up of many alien species and alliances that maintain control over a large portion of the the Milky Way Galaxy, supposedly first appearing in 938 BC. They viewed Humans as a threat to their beliefs and the Great Journey, and referred themselves as "the instruments" in destroying/eradicating Humans from existence. Thus, the Human-Covenant (soon developing to the Human-Covenant-Flood) War began. Despite their superior technology from the UNSC, they were soon defeated from internal conflicts, such as the Species rivalry and betrayal of the Sangheili (commonly known as Elites). Another marking of their internal conflict was the Flood infestation of the High Charity, a Covenant space-ship. Although the Covenant officially lost the war, they still do battle against the Humans/UNSC, but are less organized due to the loss of all their Prophets (Regret, Mercy, Truth). Their religion and society alike are heavily based on their ancient ancestors : The Forerunners. Their technology is also similar and inspired by the vastly superior technology of the Forerunners.

The Covenant (Empire) are shown in every single Halo video game, and their latest appearance was in Halo 4. However, they are shown again in Halo 4, although they are no longer one of the main enemies/antagonists, but merely as cannon fodder or a sub-enemy. The Forerunners seem to be the main antagonists as of Halo 4, as well as the Didact. They have sided with the Prometheans.

    Engineer

Engineers, or as their real-name suggests, "Huragok", are the main brains of the Covenant military. Unlike most Covenant forces, they are neutral in the Human-Covenant-Flood wars, and did not join the Covenant on their own will. They are usually enslaved or forced to do manual labor, or repairing their vehicles. They are best known for their fast movements and uncanny ability to create, disassemble, and move objects in an incredible speed. They were supposedly created by the Forerunners, and are sometimes designed to automatically commit suicide on detection of Humans via explosion.

    Hunters

Hunters are wormlike creatures who create and armour plated shell around their body. Hunters are the main muscle of the Covenant Fleet. The Hunters always fight in pairs or better known by the Covenant Bond Brothers. The hunters used a shield to protect them from their weakness the orange gap in their armour.

    Prophets

Prophets are the military and religious leaders of the Covenant, and control almost every aspect of the Covenant Armada/Empire. There are numerous Prophets, and each have similar, but also different roles. They are always protected by Honor Guards who would gladly die for them. However, they themselves are considered weak and without protection without Honor Guards, and are practically Grunts in terms of combat (not class). They can be cowardly, menacing, or kind depending on their role, and often rule with an iron fist.
