Origin

Ben Finney was really close to James Kirk when they were at the Starfleet Academy. So much so Ben named his daughter Jamie Finney after him. When she was about five her mother, his wife died. It was real hard on him and when Kirk reported him leaving a hatch open on a Starship Ben was given a reprimand.

Ben felt this was the final straw that kept him from getting promoted. He blamed Kirk for it and faked his own death and framed Kirk for it. Kirk nearly lost his command until it was proved Ben was still alive.
