    Origin

Belle-mère was the town trouble maker as a child in her home village of Cocoyashi in the East Blue. It took everyone by surprise when she joined the Navy. While out at sea fighting pirates, she was involved in a grand battle that left her alone and wounded. Just as she was about ready to give up and die, she spotted a small girl named Nojiko carrying a baby girl with her through the destruction of her town. Nojiko went to the aid children and took them back to her home village. She adopted both of these orphans and named the baby girl Nami. She then went to building up her family's orange orchard to build her living and raise these girls.

Belle-mère (ベルメール, Berumēru) is a supporting character in the One Piece series that was created by Eiichiro Oda. The series first began serialization in Shueisha's Weekly Shōnen Jump on August 4, 1997. She would later appear in the Arlong Park Arc that began in Volume 8.

Her first appearance was in One Piece Volume 9 CH. 77 "One Step of the Dream".

The Japanese edition of the manga spells her name as Bell-mère, which is seen on the gravestone in on the cover page of One Piece Vol. 64 Ch. 629. The name Belle-mère comes from the French term meaning "step-mother". Though, belle-mère overtime became understood as meaning "cruel mother". It was eventually replaced with "marâtre" to mean "stepmother". The literal meaning is "beautiful mother".

As the girls grew up money was tight, but Belle-mère sacrificed anything for the girls. They were her top priority. Even little Nami wanted to make a map of the world and showed a real talent for drawing maps. Unfortunately, she had also taken to stealing books are cartography since she thought Belle-mère couldn't afford them. They two ended up getting into a fight and Belle-mère slapped Nami when she shouted that they weren't a real family. Nojiko calmed things down and went to get Nami as Belle-mère started to cook their favorite meal.

I was on this day that Arlong, the vicious fish-man, attacked Cocoyashi and their neighboring towns with his crew. They came to Bell-mère's to enforce their self-made tax. She tried to fight them off, but was defeated by Arlong. Belle-mère didn't have enough money for both herself and the girls, but Arlong's men didn't know about her daughters since they weren't on the cities official records. However, Belle-mère's love of being a mother was so strong that she could never deny her daughters. She would pay for the girls and not herself. Nami and Nojiko came running out, having been hiding and overheard the whole thing. They tried to cling to her, but she was taken by Arlong and shot in the head in front of the girls. She spoke her last words to them with a smile before she was shot, "If you can survive, then happy times... lots of them... will come your way.".

Belle-mère was buried near the cliff at the island with a simply wooden cross. Though, this was replaced by an elegantly crafted gravestone with her name upon it several years later. Nami had become a pirate with the Straw Hats, who defeated Arlong; and Nojiko had turned the family orchard to a profit.

    Powers and Abilities

Belle-mère had recieved training in fighting and firearms during her time in the Navy. It's unknown how far she climbed in the ranks. During the One Piece Ch. 0: Strong World and other flashbacks, she's shown to be wearing the coat over her shoulders, which is indicative of an officer of Captain or higher.
