Maxine's new abilities continue to terrify Ellen and Buddy Baker, and things take a turn for the worse as Buddy begins a startling transformation of his own that will lead him on a journey into the heart of The Red. Meanwhile, The Hunters Three arrive on Earth and set their sights on the Baker family. The Hunt is on as DC's most surprising new series continues to take ANIMAL MAN in shocking new directions.

3:45am at the Baker's House in San Diego- The Baker family stand in the yard witnessing Maxine surrounded by neighborhood pets she has brought back from the dead. When Buddy and Ellen question Maxine where she found her new power she point to Buddy's chest and says there. This is when Buddy and Ellen realize Buddy has a strange tattoo of a red tree all over his chest and face. The family takes their conversation inside, along with the undead pets, and there Buddy asks Cliff to take a shovel and hide the open graves around the neighborhood. Maxine then begins to beg her father to help her save the tree that is now mapped out on his body. Before Buddy can think the family hears Cliff yelling from outside.

Cliff has been caught by Mr. Duffy, digging in his front yard. Buddy asks Mr. Duffy to let go of his son but when Mr. Duffy refuses and threaten to call the police, Maxine turns Mr. Duffy's arm in to a chicken claw. Mr. Duffy falls down in pain and panic and Buddy tries to help him while Ellen tries to convince Maxine to change the neighbor's arm back to normal. When Maxine does, Mr. Duffy runs off to call the cops. Buddy sends the kids back inside and tells his wife that he needs to take Maxine to the tree she has been talking about. Ellen agrees but not until Buddy promises to protect Maxine with his life.

6:15 AM at the San Diego Zoo- Three zoo keepers are alarmed when the find the hippos on their backs in pain, and their stomachs about to burst. When the hippos stomachs explode the Hunters Three, emerge and eat the zoo keepers taking their forms.

Meanwhile, Buddy and Maxine find the tree and it pulls them into The Red.

Into the Red wide open. 0

First off, we pick up right where issue #1 left off, in the Baker family's back yard. The main focus of this issue is the interactions between the Baker family and Cliff's journey towards, and into, the Red. The Red isn't yet fully explained in this issue so we are still left guessing some to what it actually is. Also, another of Maxine's powers is displayed, and it's quite interesting and different from her fathers. There's a particular two-page spread in this issue that blew my mind and Forema...

    Still Going Strong 0

After last month's amazing issue, can Jeff Lemire and Travel Foreman keep the readers interested in Buddy and his family?   THE GOOD: The art is amazing. It gives the book a dark tone. It's simple, and very sketchy and I love it. This issue we get information on what is going on at the Baker home. I love how, Jeff still incorporates the family drama into the series and super heroics. I think Maxine also has a strong presence in this book and I feel that she could become a very powerful character...

    Just Damn Near Perfect 0

The Good: Again, the cover is AMAZINGLY CREEPY.Wow, can Maxine get any creepier? And yet still be a lovable adorable daughter? She really drove this issue, while still being an innocent bundle of cuteness, manages to find such childlike delight in the creepiest things, and have an eerie amount of knowledge.Again, the series AMAZINGLY balances the aspects of superhero, family drama, and horror. I dunno, basically, if you want more, see my review of #1. It's a lot more of the same kind of superb p...
