One of Serkis' biggest breaks was when he was cast as Gollum in the Peter Jackson-directed Lord of the Rings trilogy, first appearing in The Fellowship of the Ring, and later returning in both sequels The Two Towers and Return of the King. The role of Gollum, made possible through the use of performance capture technology, was the first of its kind, garnering acclaim for both Jackson and Serkis. This role was the foundation for a long lasting friendship and working relationship between he and Peter Jackson. Serkis also lent his voice for Gollum in three video games: The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, The Lord of the Rings: The Battle for Middle-Earth, and The Lord of the Rings: The Battle for Middle-earth II - The Rise of the Witch-King.

Serkis would later return to the role of Gollum in 2012's The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.
