    Inspired by the short story The Sentinel by Arthur C. Clarke.

    Deep in the prehistoric past, a mysterious monolith spurs the evolution of humankind. Thousands of years after this a similar monolith is uncovered on the Moon, and Discovery One, an American spaceship run by a computer called HAL 9000, is en route to Jupiter carrying Dr. David Bowman, Dr. Frank Poole, and three other scientistsin cryogenic hibernation. However, the journey is going to take unexpected paths.

    The film was adapted by Jack Kirby in the Treasury Edition (1976) and in the series 2001, A Space Odyssey (1976-1977).
