Are you ready for the big event taking place in DC Comics? The word is this will "change everything." Is that actually the case? Do not flip through the book before reading!
The Good
Like most readers these days, I am extremely reluctant when publishers announce the next big event. We've heard the promises before how things will never be the same. Despite having event-overload, I was excited about this. With Geoff Johns and Andy Kubert part of the creative team, along with all the teasers we've seen, this has the makings of something big.
Does this live up to the hype? Yes, it does. From what you may already know, Barry Allen wakes up to a strange world. Everything is different. We have an idea what has happened but don't know the complete story. That is (I assume) what we will discover along the way. This is similar to the recent
Age of X storyline but here's a little secret: it seems to work so much better here. With Age of X, I couldn't commit myself to waiting around to see what the deal was. With Flashpoint, I'm on the edge of my seat.
With Kubert's art, you will want to take each in each panel one by one. It's always a treat to simply look at each character to see his interpretation of them. And we do have quite a few characters here. Obviously some are new and others are strange but familiar versions of the characters we know. Yes, indeed, things have changed.
The Bad
Geoff Johns and Andy Kubert delivering a crazy story full of new/familiar characters...what could there be not to like? There is one character besides Barry Allen that plays a big role here. That just adds icing to the cake. I'm not crazy about the idea of getting sucked into a huge comics event but this was just so good. There is some build up here. We are getting introduced to some of the different characters. There are questions that we won't get answers to right away but that's part of the story. The overall vibe cranked up my excitement.
The Verdict
Flashpoint is finally here. Everything does indeed change. Forget about the DC Universe you know and enjoy the story by Geoff Johns and Andy Kubert. We've seen the numerous teasers and now we can get ready for this crazy ride. Kubert's art is stunning as usual and you will want to take the time to look at and appreciate the detail he puts into each character and panel. Johns has the ability to create new versions of characters we know and he takes some in very interesting directions. Being the first issue of a new event, there is some build up that takes place. But knowing where we are going jacks up the excitement. Despite being thrusted into this new comic universe, it didn't seem to bother me as it did with Age of X at Marvel. Be sure to read the entire issue and do not flip to the final page. I am officially more excited now than I have been in a while for a comic event.
