The worst of this series is still better then most

Fell is like a treat. You get great self contained stories, with minor sub-plots at a great price. Of course the story is only 16 pages, but you get that for $2.40 (CND). Even though the story itself is only 16 pages, Ellis doesn't waste anytime in his story telling. Most of his stories could easily be stretched out to 22 pages with what has become traditional comic book writing. Instead he doesn't waste any time, and doesn't waste the readers time with details that wouldn't be all that important anyways.

This is issue 7... I think I would probably grade issues 1-6 as Great, but this one is the weakest of the series so far. It's still probably better then a lot of the junk you'll find on sale, but it falls short of what has been established in previous issues.

First off none of the supporting characters show up in this issue. It's the only ongoing aspect of this series. The Lieutenant, Mayko and even the creepy ass nun in the Richard Nixon mask doesn't show up. That's all fine and good since the series main purpose is to tell self-contained stories.

The problem however is that the entire issue takes place in the interrogation room. That on itself wouldn't be a problem since Ellis still makes it interesting. The real problem with this is that he's done it before, done it better, and has done it before in THIS series and we're only at issue #7.

The other thing that got to me is that Detective Fell makes a grave mistake in this issue. The mistake he makes is so glaringly obvious that as a reader I recognized that he was screwing up while he was doing it. This is in total contrast to previous issues where Fell is usually way ahead of the reader, and has been established as an extremely smart character that knows his way around the law to make sure criminals go to jail.

The only other minor complaint I have is that the back up Black Matter is missing from this issue, in it's place we get a preview of Casanova by Matt Fraction. I really liked Black Matter in the previous issues as Ellis would usually show part of the script and discuss where he got his idea for that particular issue. Maybe most people won't miss it that much, but I'm fascinated with the writing process and highly enjoyed this. Hopefully it'll be back next issue.

Seems like a lot of complaints. Like I said at the beginning however, this issue might still be better then a lot of the other stuff out there. It's just the weakest issue in a all around great series. Since the series is so good, I felt I had to justify why I would rate this particular issue lower then the rest.
