An intrepid group of astronauts: Reed Richards, Sue Storm, Johnny Storm, and Ben Grimm originally received their powers after being exposed to an immense amount of cosmic radiation during a trip into space. Mutated and given strange powers by this exposure, they became the Fantastic Four and dedicated their abilities to the good of humanity.
@arthurkerr: I don't think that he should be able to change back. Much about what makes the character great is that he is a monster. His power isn't always a blessing like it is for most superheroes. There have been a lot of stints in the book where he has been able to change back, although it has obviously always been temporary for one reason or another. It makes him a tragic and sympathetic character instead of someone who has it all.
I do think that some of this has worn off as he has been around for over 50 years so it does lose some of the impact, but reading the early issues is really interesting to see how much of it revolves around Ben's plight and Reed trying to cure him . . . which he does on several occasions.
