A Loss For Words
So. Here we are. The final issue of the Fantastic Four. Is it at least good? Spoilers ahead.
Oh yeah. To be honest, I actually don't care for the art of the main story so much. Epting took the month off and we got Nick Dragotta instead. I am not too familiar with his style. But then after going through the story, it seems to fit the issue well. The facial expressions really tell the tale and get you feeling what the character is going through. Dragotta and Hickman sure paired well here.
I do have to say that despite not liking the art so much, Kristoff Vernard looks wicked awesome.
The main story here has no words. That's right. No words. And I LOVE it. Sometimes you forget how awesome it is to use your imagination. The pictures set the moods and the rest is up to you. The story follows how everyone deals with the loss of the Human Torch individually rather than as a whole. We get a great glimpse at Mr. Fantastic, Invisible Woman and Valeria all way on the dark side over this. Thing also seems to be taking Johnny's loss very hard.
Then after all that awesomeness, we get a back up story and it's actually good! You may not have made the connection, but Franklin and Spider-Man now have very much in common. The story is very endearing. If you are just a Spider-Man fan and could care less about the Fantastic Four, you should still buy this issue.
In the end, I give this book a perfect score of 5 out of 5. I might have dropped a half a star from some of the artwork (not all), but it gets that half back and more back for two really emotional stories that have me reading them over and over again.
