In the same vein as best-selling "fractured-fairy-tales" such as Wicked and Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister is Bill Willingham's runaway hit graphic novel series FABLES. No longer just children's tales, Willingham has created a new world for these beloved fables...one that exists within our own. When a savage creature known only as the Adversary conquered the fabled lands of legends and fairy tales, all of the infamous inhabitants of folklore were forced into exile. Disguised among the normal citizens of modern-day New York, these magical characters created their own secret society-within an exclusive luxury apartment building on Manhattan's Upper West Side-called Fabletown. But when Snow White's party-girl sister, Rose Red, is apparently murdered, it is up to Bigby, Fabletown's sheriff, and a reformed and pardoned Big Bad Wolf, to determine if the culprit is Bluebeard, Rose's ex-lover and notorious wife killer, or Jack, her current live-in boyfriend and former beanstalk-climber.

Forgotten characters reborn on paper and in our minds 0

Wow! I should have never let this book sit on the comic book shop shelf without getting it. For once, I was perfectly surprised by a comic trade from start to finish.  First off, what a great story to re-introduce some of the most lovable and memorable characters of my childhood. You only have to look above at the list of characters to see that Bill Willingham has made a great effort at writing in some of the richest characters of fable lore into this book. It's large and ambitious in its scope,...

Fables is the Vertigo Hot Series! 0

If you have not read fables, then you did not get the memo.  Consider this the memo received.  Public Domain characters are growing in popularity because anyone can write story dealing with someone like Little Red Riding Hood.  Bill Willingham happened to notice this trend (back in 2002) before it was over saturated and create his Fables universe.  Now Fables is the leader in Public Domain characters.  This first trade collects the first 5 issues of the acclaimed series and no since Sandman has ...

First of all, I don't buy single comics but only trade paperbacks or even bigger volumes (like omnibi), so reviewing a volume that features a single story arc is always easier - like in this case, because the introducing story of the Fables starts with a big-shot of a story arc, the Legends in Exile. I must say - being a 27 years old male, Snow White, Prince Charming and the Big Bad Wolf are not in my all-time favorite characters list -- at all. But after playing with telltale games' The Wolf Am...
