Essex County is a collection of stories about a farming community is southwestern Ontario, Canada. Each volume follows a different character in a complex plot told in different time periods and through flashbacks. Issues explored within range from Canadian identity, family, infidelity, imagination and belonging. Through the characters, we get a sense of each stage of life: the struggles of childhood through young Lester, the rigors of old age through elderly Lou Lebeuf and the exploration of middle age through Lou's nurse, Anne Byrne.
