Cutter Kinseeker has secured his place in the legacy of elfdom: he and Suntoucher have united the Wolfriders with the Sun Villagers. Although their cultures are different, Cutter and his tribe are given space outside of Sun Village to howl at the moon.
Cutter finally tells the story of his father Bearclaw's demise to the mutant beast, Madcoil. In this Wolfrider tradition, he honours the tradition of death, that delivers the elves into an eternal kinship with the The High-Ones, the immortal Material Sons who first descended onto the world of two moons. This is also the story of how Moonblade , the sacred dagger made of Blue Mountain ore by Two-Edge, was passed from Bearclaw, blood of (the wolfriders') nine chiefs, to Cutter Kinseeker.
Leetah, who is gaining confidence in her lifebond with Cutter, eavesdrops on the tale surreptitiously. Only Treestump notices her.
