"Why, What Do You Think, Boy? RUN!"
Several years after the death of the Trinity, the destinies of Earth-2's next wave of heroes are about to begin.
The Good
Let's start with that cover, it's awesome. I love the look of panic in Jay Garrick's face as he tries to escape those Apokorats! Meanwhile in the issue, I also like the lack of confidence he has and the why after he gains his powers, he doesn't know what to do except run! There's also this awesome panel where he uses his superspeed to save some civilians.
Moving onto Alan Scott, regarding the "controversial" change in making him homosexual - I've no idea what issue many DC fans take with this! As far as I'm concerned, his relationship with Sam was written well and for this I admire Robinsons' apparantly "radical" spin on a character has been a staple of the DC Universe for years. Some people just can't handle change? :o
Another neat touch that was introduced in #1 and carrying on here is the fact through various references and tidbits, we are fully aware of the impact the death of the Trinity had on this parallel earth, as well as the little differences that makes Earth-2 it's own unique setting. There's this fantastic double-page spread in a crowded city street where various giant televisions and billboards are sprouting out bits of information that firmly establish that Earth-2 is certainly not the "normal" DCnU dimension (I forget what it's called!)
The Bad
For some reason I'm not quite so keen on the cliffhanger. Perhaps because what occurs was so sudden? I'm of the disposition to like having clues seeded in cliffhangers so I'm kept musing and guessing what happens next. Here though, I felt a bit "OK...".
Conclusion
A worthy follow-up to the fantastic debut issue! I really like the direction this series is taking and I plan to stick around for sure. :)
