Goku Should Still Be Able to "Breathe" in Space

For example, once you reach the peaks of Mount Everest the air gets so thinned that you usually need oxygen masks/tanks so you stay alive.

Once you get to the various layers of our atmosphere it's virtually impossible to breathe without some sort of life-supporting equipment.

Mind you, Mount Everest at its peaks is around 8 km. As you can see in the image above, the troposphere, the layer closest to the Earth, goes up to 20 km. And the other layers go up to hundreds and thousands of kilometers. And when you have Goku fighting in the thermosphere or exosphere with Beerus for extended periods of time then the reasoning that he's still technically within the atmosphere makes no sense since there's no real air to breathe at those points.

Meaning if he can actually fight in those conditions then by default he should be able to move around in space or go underwater without worrying about breathing.

My point is if at 8 km you get serious trouble breathing and you need oxygen masks, then imagine fighting at 10,000 km up in the sky where there isn't an air to breathe at all.

Dragon ball doesn't use real world logic. And even if it did, it is never stated saiyans breath the exact same way humans do. It is just stated that they can't survive in the vacuum of space or underwater.

Didn't they specifically state Goku and Beerus fought in the stratosphere?

But, I do get what you're saying and it makes sense. But then again, Vegeta had a hard time breathing fighting Magetta, which should have had even greater levels of oxygen than the stratosphere.

It's weird how Vegeta was able to stay under water for so long when hiding from Frieza on Namek.

It seems that Saiyans may have some form of anaerobic respiration like Naked Mole Rats. That would explain how they are able to survive for a limited (30-40 minutes) amount of time in an extremely low oxygen environment. Obviously, this time would decrease rapidly the more effort you expend.

To be fair, it is kinda true.

There are those that don't need to breathe or can "hold their breath" for ridiculous amounts of time.

But BREATHING per se, in a place almost devoid of everything... well nope...

I don't think Buu has actual lungs to breath with.

You could technically "breathe" in space, but only via a form of internal anaerobic respiration, and that would be only for a limited time until the reactants are used up. More likely, an animal would enter a form a stasis, like the Tardigrade, in which they no longer need to breathe.

Also, I'm not sure if Angels follow the normal laws of physics. At least they don't look the the classical eldritch horror angels.

Toriyama said Goku and Beerus could Stull breathe in the stratosphere, since they're aliens. Even though realistically, they shouldn't be able to breathe at that altitude.

Avatar image for yameister

Well saiyans can

Remember in dragon ball z saiyan saga vegeta while destroying a planet was at stratosphere or I think even beyond stratosphere.

since they are saiyans not human so yeah basically they can breathe at earth's or any other planet outermost atmosphere.

So answer is saiyan after going out of any other planets atmosphere can't breath but

can breath inside or at most outer layer of atmosphere

since they are saiyans so yeah basically we can say because they are not human they are alien

Well, I don't see them breathing, I see them talking, fighting, and going about their business, which as I have said, they can, but no breathing.

Well, it is debatable that Freeza could breathe in space, as it was repeatedly stated he could survive in space.

yeah but atleast they can survive on space though

they cannot breath but they can stay as long as they want like frieza

seems to be standing on earth and flying in space is pretty much same for them

So saiyans are naked mole rats.

If that's how you want to think of them. We recently discovered that Naked Mole Rats can switch thier respiratory system from Glucose (Oxygen+Sugar=Energy) like an animal to Fructose (Enzyme+Sugar=Energy) like a plant. This allows them to survive in low oxygen tunnels without suffering from brain death for relatively long periods of time. Naked Mole Rats are possibly stranger than the Platypus, as they are cold blooded mammals, who living in an insect style colony, and can "breathe" fructose like a plant.

For the Saiyans, the biggest problem of space isn't the lack of oxygen, but depressurization, which can cause the delicate structures in their lungs to rupture if they hold their breath, all the internal gas and liquid in their bodies that had an easy exit would force their way out uncontrollably, and they would likely start suffering from seizers soon after. It isn't the lack of air that kills them, it's the hard vacuum.

Honestly, in Resurrection of F, Vegeta probably died in one of the most humiliating ways possible. Even if he did survive, I doubt a prideful prince could live with themselves very well after forcefully and uncontrollably vomiting, urinating, and defecating themselves into unconsciousness while having a seizer.

Well... you should google the definition of "breath". They did not breath, they don't have to breath in space. There is nothing to breath in...

@deathhero61: That is why we have Toyotaro to help keep him straight.

Then again, Goku was only able to breathe in space in Dragon Ball due to a gag, and then it was corrected in Z.
