1. Toriyama's favorite character is piccolo, sorry Vegeta fanboy's.
Incidentally, who is your favorite character?
Yeah, I guess I like Piccolo the most after all. Out of all the enemies, Piccolo Daimaō is the one I like most, and even after that I like Piccolo the most. I like Piccolo about the same as I like Goku. With Vegeta, well, I don’t like him all that much, but he was extremely helpful to have around. For the recent stuff, it was fun drawing Satan. When I first brought him out, I didn’t think that I would end up making Satan that important of a character. I thought he’d just be a one-shot character.
Satan is like that, but thinking up worthless gags is more enjoyable than doing the fight scenes. (laughs)
2. Freeza was based off of a queen. No wonder he's a prick.
What about Freeza?
I vaguely remember basing him off a queen or something in some movie.
3. Toriyama recommended GT. Not anymore.
In that case, GT comes with Toriyama-sensei’s recommendation!
Yes! I recommend it. I’m also looking forward to it as an ordinary viewer.
4. Toriyama might have made a GT manga.( thank god toyotaro wasn't around.)
With regards to the anime’s new series, Dragon Ball GT, how involved are you?
Just a little bit. I’ll check the stories that come up from Toei Animation, and give them a little bit of advice. Also, I’ve drawn just a few characters and illustrations. But it’s interesting! It feels like, “Ah, so they could do it this way”. I think everyone at Toei Animation really racked their brains. Good work. To think they’d make Goku little. With this story, I might even be able to continue the manga serialization again… though I have absolutely no intention of drawing it. (laughs)
5.Toriyama joked about putting in a SSJ White, he probably will.
Toyotarō-sensei, do you have any questions about the manga for Toriyama-sensei?
My question’s so trivial I’m kind of ashamed, but… why does Super Saiyan Blue have blue hair?
In Battle of Gods it was red, so I figured for Revival of “F” I should go with blue. That’s all (laughs). Well, actually I was thinking about having it be white, but then it would color-clash with the “next enemy”… so I figured I should save it for another occasion (laughs).
… I get the feeling I’ve just heard something amazing (laughs). Lord Beerus and Whis turn up in Dragon Ball Super, and have become an unsurpassable wall for Goku and the gang. What do the two of them mean to you?
Well… First off, right now I don’t have any plans for Goku and Vegeta to surpass Beerus and Whis.
Ever since Battle of Gods, Beerus and Whis have become central figures.
If it hadn’t been for those two, making any more story after that would have been a nightmare. There wouldn’t have been anything to expand upon. That’s why I’m so glad to have them around. And their voices are good, too! Those voice artists are so talented!
Beerus is voiced by Kōichi Yamadera, and Whis is voiced by Masakazu Morita.
6. Mr. Satan's real name is mark. What a scrub.
By the way, what’s Satan’s real name?
Mr. Satan is a ring name; his real name is different. Mr. Satan’s real name is “Mark”. (It’s an anagram of “akuma” [“demon”/”devil”].)1In the area where Satan lives, names are not separated into surnames and given names, so his name is just Mark. His daughter Videl is not a ring name, but her real name. It’s an anagram of “devil”.
7. Bobbidi was made by bibbidi splitting in two, talk about being lonely.
Q6: How was Bobbidi born?
Toriyama: Bibbidi split in two!
Rather than a child, he’s more like Bibbidi’s doppelganger. He’d split up whenever there was anything difficult for just a single person to do. He could increase the number of doppelgangers even more, but his magical powers would weaken in proportion. Now that Bibbidi is dead and Bobbidi has become the only one, he’s regained all the original magical power.
8. No.17 in the buu saga was supposed to be Lunch. He got lucky cause she was trying to bang Tenshinhan.
The Truth Is!
Toriyama: No.17 during the Genki-Dama scene was actually Lunch in the rough draft.
Lunch went off chasing after Tenshinhan. Since Tenshinhan and Chiaotzu moved around from place to place as they trained, they really gave her the slip.
By the way, it’s said that after the Cell arc No.17 became an outstanding park ranger at a royal nature park, and built a happy family.1
9. Nappa actually had a power level of 4000, lol I knew he was trash.
Q2: About how high are the Saiyans’ battle powers?
Nappa is about 4,000!!
When they invaded Earth, Raditz was 1,500 and Vegeta 18,000, so there are big gaps even among members of the same race.
10. No.17 has been ranging the shit out of his park.
Q6: Where’d Artificial Human No. 17 go after the Cell arc, and what did he do?
He works in the wildlife preserve area of a gigantic royal nature park, as an outstanding guard who doesn’t hold back against poachers.2
It’s an ideal job for No. 17, who loves to be on his own and isn’t big on cooperating with others; since he’s so good at his job, he takes in a high salary. He’s married to a zoologist; they have one child and two adopted children, and live happily in an isolated house inside the nature park.
He went and met No. 18 and Kuririn one time, but didn’t talk about what he’d been up to, maybe because he considers such a wholesome lifestyle embarrassing.
11. The true omniking is Popo
Who is the true omniking?
Toriyama: I would have to say it is actually Mr. Popo. The real reason Zen oh sama destroyed 6 universes was because he was trying to beat Mr. Popo, but Mr.Popo blitzed him and oneshotted him so hard that 6 universes blew up. Of course Mr. Popo was holding back. So it wasn't actually Zen oh who destroyed them.
12. Yamcha's good at something after all, and surprisingly it's cooking.
There are a lot of mealtime scenes shown in Dragon Ball, but who’s the best cook?
The best ones at cooking are Gyūmaō and Yamcha, probably? For some reason, they have that sort of image.
13. SSG hair color is red because red is a stronger looking color. (How the hell does that work?)
Tell us why the hair color of Super Saiyan God is red!
Simply because it’s a strong-looking color. I had already used gold, and blue doesn’t look very strong. Visually-speaking, red really is easy to understand.
14. Part of the reason Goku became so tall during the time skip in DB is because he went into the ROSAT. Krillin should try it sometime.
Q2: When did Goku enter the Room of Spirit and Time?
When he trained at God’s place as a boy!
When he was training to fight against Piccolo, he entered the Room of Spirit and Time. His height also shot right up!
15. Toriyama can't decide on the conditions for fusing. Nothing new.
Q4: Can anybody perform Fusion if their body size and power are the same?
Toriyama: It’s hard, but they can!
I think it’s possible to merge no matter the conditions, as long as it all goes well. I even think it’s possible for a larger number of people. However, since it’s quite hard for both parties to strike that delicate balance, it’s very difficult for two extremely different people to fuse. In that sense, synchronized swimmers would probably be really good at Fusion. By the way, there are many different types of Fusion, and the kind Goku learned is the one for increasing battle power.
If a man and a woman fused, maybe they’d end up like a drag queen? A super-duper strong drag queen; it might be kind of interesting. I should have drawn that back during the serialization. (laughs) I kind of regret [not doing it].
16. The demon realm is pathetically small.
Q8: What sort of place is the Demon Realm?
Toriyama: It’s a hideout for mages!
The Demon Realm is located in the universe, but its scale is very small, the size of a hideout for mages. The mages live in the Demon Realm like evil goblins.
17. Videl's mom was a Singer named Miguel.
Toriyama: Satan’s wife was a beautiful singer named Miguel!
Since she was named “Miguel (archangel)”2, during their marriage a big fuss was made about how “an angel is marrying a devil!”
Even though he intended Satan to just be a one-shot character, it seems he became so fond of Satan that you could even say Satan’s his favorite.
18. When a mommy Kai and a daddy Kai love each other very much...
Dragon Ball Worldview: Inside Scoop
The Secret Behind the Birth of the Gods
Toriyama: The Kaiō are born and raised on a planet called the “Planet of the World Core”.
The Kaiō are born as “Core People” from the fruit of the gigantic World Tree on the Planet of the World Core. The planet’s population is about 80, and their lifespans are about 75,000 years. The Core People have no gender, and live laid-back lives, studying various things at a school-like castle. When a Kaiō on one of the Kaiō planets dies, the next Kaiō is chosen from among them by lottery. However, the Kaiōshin are only chosen from Core People born from a rare, special golden fruit.
19. Merged Zamasu and Black Goku have a higher degree of danger than Beerus
Degree of Danger:
*********(Jaycool edit: this is a degree of 9)
Universe 7’s God of Destruction. He is fickle, and will destroy planets when in a bad mood.
Degree of Danger:
A warrior who looks just like Goku, and appeared in the world of 17 years hence. His true identity is Zamasu, who switched bodies with Goku.
Degree of Danger:
The form Goku Black and Zamasu reach after merging via the Potara. He is so strong that others cannot even approach him.
20. Atsushi Kido(Producer of DBS) says that the strongest fighter besides Beerus is Goku Black.
Who’s the strongest out of all these? We asked producer, Atsushi Kido.
The God of Destruction Beerus is overwhelmingly strong, but if we leave him out, then I think the strongest fighter is Goku Black. I’d say he’s used Son Goku’s power as a base and evolved in his own, unique way.
21. Toriyama can't remember what Bulma's hair color is.
The characters certainly have changed slightly since the “Majin Boo arc”! When I first saw the movie’s poster, I was particularly surprised at the changes in Kuririn’s and Videl’s hairstyles
!I am not at all particular about things like hair styles and colors. Especially with women, changing their hairstyle or color is a bit too commonplace, don’t you think? With people like Bulma, I actually don’t even know myself what their natural hair color is. (laughs)
Whaaat?! And I was sure that the blue she had when she first appeared was her natural hair color. (laughs)
I’m not at all particular about things. Er, well, I am particular about things I should be particular about, like the dialogue. (laughs)
22. Toriyama changed the pilaf gang into children cause they were to old
Was the Pilaf gang appearing again also something you were particular about, Sensei? They had become children, though….
Yeah, about that. (laughs)Originally, they were just going to be petty thieves. But since we were going to have the entire cast, I thought [it wouldn’t be great if] some unknown characters just suddenly showed up. So I made them into the Pilaf gang. But you know, thinking long and hard about it after making that decision, they were all getting pretty old. (laughs)
Mai says she’s 41 years old. (laughs)
So I came up the idea that if I made them younger, they’d be just right.
23. Toriyama cares about consistency
Now then, on a different note, in this movie, a variety of new story elements have been revealed. For example, I believe there’s “Beerus’s Castle” that appears at the beginning, and “the reason why Planet Kaiō is small”; could you tell us about that sort of thing?
The design for Beerus’s castle was fun to come up with. When I’m thinking up a story, somehow, I want to make things consistent. No matter if he’s a God of Destruction, it would be bad if he just showed up for no reason and went on a rampage, wouldn’t it? Even I myself think that feels wrong.…. So, even if it’s not expressed within the work, I always work to come up with a convincing background story within myself.
24. Toriyama purposely forgets things
Do you write down notes anywhere for that sort of background information?
No, I don’t do that. That’s why I keep on forgetting things. If I don’t forget stuff, new ideas won’t come to mind. For example, you know how there’s “Super Saiyan 3”?
Yes. Where the hair gets long.
I didn’t know that. (laughs) The whole time, I thought that was “Super Saiyan 2”. (laughs)
And I drew that myself. (laughs) Anyhow, I thought “2” was the one with long hair. It was like, “Man, I’ve really forgotten stuff…”.
25. Toriyama created whis as "a sign of the times"
No, no! Nappa was plenty strong. (laughs) Although Beerus is in a class of his own. Now then, speaking of Beerus, there’s his attendant, the mysterious man Whis. How did the birth of this character come about?
A sign of the times, I suppose….
A sign of the times?
“Guess it’s about time I brought out a good-lookin’ feller1, too!” …I thought. (laughs) And so Whis was born. Well, more so than a “good-lookin’ feller”, he became a character who’s sort of naïvely oblivious, but as a result, I came to like this one quite a bit too. So, Beerus and Whis. Bringing them out in sets of two might also be a characteristic of my stories.
