Dr. J. Poe Lovecraft was a minor psychologist who lived an inadequate childhood filled with insecurities and personal setbacks despite his friends and family insisting otherwise. Taking a career as a surrogate psychologist to the Evanston Clinic within The City under chief psychologist Dr. Korg, Dr. Lovecraft would examine and prod his patients with mind-control measures and subliminal signals through TV episodes of ' Gidget' reruns and fed select patients constant meals of Tapioca pudding to induce monotony to further his use of control. In time, Dr. Lovecraft acquired domination over the asylum after using his own mind-control techniques on the unsuspected chief medical examiner into a talking puppet.

One such patient was the prior "Nick" then revealed to be The Tick who committed himself after leaving his wife from an identity crisis within his blue tick uniform before he settled to leave the institute to become a crime-fighter. To latter effects, Tick simply broke out of his straight jacket and the rubber room followed by events of his divorce from his wife and a need for purpose out of the madhouse to redefine himself. Tick would liberate himself by tying and suspending a pair of guards before crashing through a wall.

Many years later as Tick cemented his crime-fighting reputation with Arthur, The Tick was induced by subliminal messages from mail and telegram by Dr. Lovecraft's lackey, Pox, to induce the Tick to return to the Evanston Clinic so Dr. Lovecraft could cure him from becoming a super-hero being a bit unstable to the real world. As Arthur returned to find Tick gone as a result of foul play, Tick's devoted cult Mystic Order of Arachnid Vigilance would have its own cult member go missing from a brainwashing message by Dr. Lovecraft to return to the Evanston Clinic for treatment but not before picking-up The Red Eye vexed he wasn't taken to Pasadena as he instructed to the driver.

Follow-ups would have Chairface Chippendale set to engineer his takeover of the City with fake Tick and deranged ex-hero Barry Hubris/ the "other" Tick assume himself a fake hero to gain personal glory for heroics. This plan would crumble due to Barry's mental instability in killing one of Chairface Chippendale's cronies in a botched robbery prompting Chairface to release the blue Tick from a breakout to remove the latter Tick.

The Red Eye arrived to the Evanston Clinic as had Arthur and the Mystic Order of Arachnid Vigilance to release the Tick subjected to his psyche, flashbacks and muddled past before he became a hero by Dr. Lovecraft's brainwashing, electroshocks and flashback inducement methods before he was set to rip off Tick's "mask" unaware it was Tick's actual "face". Pox would be brainwashed by Red Eye to oversight the power grid to induce an explosion while Arthur released other abducted inmates of Dr. Lovecraft to aid their escape. As Chippendale arrived to the asylum did he realize Barry Hubris/ "other" Tick reveal himself stowed away set to reattribute revenge on a double-cross or by an erratic decision to eliminate the criminal until the asylum exploded taking down the helicopter with Chairface and Barry down with them.

A television monitor with shrapnel impaled into Dr. Lovecraft's chest cavity which lead him to slowly die but not before revealing his intent to make The Tick "normal" for his dangerous lifestyle as a super-hero despite his noble deeds. Revealing his face to been more gorgeous and model-related, the insecure Dr. Lovecraft could only despise his minor blemished nose for a small mole that he felt made him a deformed outcast to the world until he died. Despite the destruction Tick and Arthur survived with sets of escaped inmates, both Tick and Arthur left the facilities for the law to handle stalemate if Dr. Lovecraft was a menace or not.
