    Teetering Interest

Rick Remender continues to pile the opposition on our new Sorcerer Supreme Jericho Drumm. And this is starting to wear on me. Granted it is only 3 books deep, but Voodoos only shining moment thus far was in the first seven pages of the first book. Other than that evil forces have done nothing but beat down Jericho with no hope in sight.

In the first book we had Doctor Doom still thinking he was more deserving of been the new Sorcerer Supreme taking his anger out on Voodoo and then deserting him in a dimension where his powers do not effect the hostile inhabitants. The second book continues from this point where the first one left off, and Jerichos beat down continues. In this one he runs into Daimon Hellstrom who with the use of Jerichos walking stick frees Nightmare. This is where the third book picks up. The world is over run with the hostile creatures from the dimension Doom left Drumm in, Nightmare is unleashing all of humanities deepest fears and nightmares, and Drumm is running out of places to turn. As of right now Drumm only has one ally and that is his brother. As Drumm continues to search for help Nightmare reveals that this was all a plan he set in motion, and one he continues to plot out and control. Not to mention, it seems that anyone with supernatural powers can be controlled by Nightmare.

This is what I am talking about thought, It seems that things just keep piling on top of Drumm. First Doom, then a world full of hostile creatures, then Hellstorm and Nightmare, then a Nightmare controlled army of supernatural powered heroes and villains. It is just starting to wear on me, and making it harder for me to stay interested if Remender continues to beat down Drumm for no other apparent reason than simply because he is the new SS and evil forces are taking advantage of it. This story has been told before in books and movies, and it is just one this is always hit and miss, and right now it is more miss than hit.

Enough about the story though, artist Jefte Palo, and colorer Jean-Francois Beaulieu continue to do an excellent job bringing the whole New Orleans, bayou, black magic look to the book. The magic looks faded yet bright and deep, the look of the locations definitely has the look and feel of the locations, as do the characters. Right now it is these two that continue to keep me interested in this book, and I hope eventually the story turns around and becomes interesting so that I can continue to enjoy the book overall instead of just two-thirds of it.
