Joe Ledger (The Doctor, so named because of his skill in "surgical" covert military operations) has been rendered comatose by an alien crystal that bonded to his arm during testing of potential military applications. Ledger relives his memories as the crystal probes his psyche.
Ledger first recalls a covert ops mission where he lead a small team in an infiltration. As the team storms through a doorway, Ledger finds himself back in his childhood home with his mother. After a confrontation with his mother over his father (who left them before even learning Joe's name) and his stepfather. Young Joey steps through the door to his bedroom and finds himself an adult again, as his girlfriend Anna leaves him after discovering evidence of an affair.
In the real world outside the crystal, military scientists and doctors take Ledger back to a hospital following the testing accident, with the knowledge that top military brass are more concerned with the security of the alien crystal than with Joe Ledger's life. An EMT attempts to pry the crystal loose from Ledger's arm, and is burned to ash by a massive release of energy from the crystal.
The crystal continues to interrogate Ledger, appearing in the guise of his ex-girlfriend Anna, in his own form, and in the form of a military judge.
