Dr. Goodwrench was first seen when he appeared at a West Coast Monster Truck Show which several members of the Avengers West Coast were hosting as a favor to Wonder Man. As various Monster Trucks and even a large, fire-breathing dinosaur, were used to smash each other, he made his presence known. He proclaimed himself the first Mechanical Rights Activist and that he was going to help machines get vengeance for centuries of abuse. He took control of the robot dinosaur and the Monster Trucks, causing it to attack the crowd. When the Avengers intercepted his attacks, he directed the machines and robots to attack them. He even took control of Iron Man's armor, forcing him to attack the other Avengers. Ultimately the Vision confronted him, and convinced him that although machines should be treated with respect, that none of those he was manipulating were capable of talking to him. Realizing he was suffering from delusions, Dr. Goodwrench surrendered to the Avengers, who promised to get him psychiatric care.

Dr. Goodwrench is able to animate and manipulate machinery to do his bidding via mental command. He can also communicate with and control the functions of computers. This ability is even effective on the advanced armor of Iron Man. It is uncertain whether he could forcibly override the control of a sentient machine, such as a synthezoid like the Vision.
