Three-for-three!
James Tynion IV continues to knock it out of the park with his run on Detective Comics.
As a team-based book, the absolute most important thing is getting the characters right, and here they continue to be written in a way that proves Tynion understands them all very well. From Kate's reconnection with Renee Montoya, to Kate and Tim slowly building a professional rapport with each other, to the amusing reactions Spoiler and Clayface have to seeing Batman getting beaten up, to Cass's quiet moments both when by herself and while taking down enemies, everything is top-notch. But this arc is primarily Batwoman's story, and by the end of this issue it's clear that she's in for one heck of a character arc. It's thrilling to think of what the future holds for her.
The reveal of the Colony's leader came as a surprise for so early in this arc, but their actual identity should've been obvious by the second issue. Regardless, this is a game-changer for the series and retroactively slots in to previous stories almost perfectly. It's a risky move that will no doubt upset some people, but also brilliant in my opinion.
Detective Comics continues to be one of Rebirth's best titles. Thrilling, fast-paced, full of wonderful characters, and absolutely gorgeous art. Highly, highly recommended.
