Batman's first recurring enemy and the first Batmobile appearance
Gardner Fox returns to write "The Return of Doctor Death", the sequel to "The Batman Meets Doctor Death". In so doing, he further expands the Batman mythology. Batman again conceals gas capsules in his utility belt, and, although we've seen him in a car before, for the first time we learn that he has a "specially built high-powered auto", which would seem to indicate that this is the first Batmobile.
Doctor Death, it turns out, escaped his burning home via a trapdoor, but not before he was disfigured. While the first time we see him, his face is wrapped in bandages, we come to learn that he also uses a disguise, both to hide his disfigured face. Financially ruined by the fire, he is still motivated by greed, but now also a hatred for the Batman.
So now, only about a month after Superman got his first super-villain nemesis, the Ultra-Humanite, Batman now has his own to contend with.
While the issue shows some flaws here and there, such as why was Doctor Death disfigured green? (unless it was the chemicals in the lab, making him a possible Joker rough draft as Ultra-Humanite was for Luthor); Batman referring to Jubah as a Cossack even though he was Indian, and so on. But overall, the story is still stronger than average for the period.
The addition of Sheldon Moldoff as a supplemental inker has upped the quality of the art in this entry - shadowy rooms and night skies in particular look better.
