Saint Van Sant/ Deathtoll is a merciless and sarcastic murderer who speaks heavily in cliché. Growing up the son of a pig farmer detached to the morality of murder watching animals slaughtered for food, Saint's lack for handling death disappointed his father in the family trade prompting Saint to murder him. Taking a position as a mercenary in his twenties, Saint was hired by the government of India to eliminate a collection of Thugee criminals whom Saint delivered on their executions only to appease the sects Statue of Kali. The goddess imbued Saint with magics allowing him to become revived whenever he died and could absorb the life force of whomever he murdered another life making him unkillable. In time, as Deathtoll, Saint aspired to taking more dangerous and risky assassinations out of deranged faith or sociopathic desires.

As Deathtoll, Saint Van Sant later became an occultist hired assassin who was hired to eliminate War Machine by private financiers, Leviticus, who wanted the hero dead for jeopardizing a prior illegal weapons operation by convicting several affiliates for weapons dealings which lead Deathtoll to locate War Machine in armor speaking in behalf of the United Nations where Deathtoll had worked to killing various representatives to reach War Machine. War Machine used force to take Deathtoll's fight outside the building in mid-air whom the mercenary then wriggled free into the ocean to escape War Machine, but not before War Machine snapped Deathtoll's neck for his evils. Bringing the dead mercenary out of the ocean for authorities, War Machine suspected Deathtoll dead until Deathtoll absorbed the life of a rat and revived before escaping.

Hindered, Leviticus later sent Deathtoll to combat War Machine's unarmored identity as diplomat James Rhodes without formally realizing that James Rhodes and War Machine were one and the same. James was rescued on board to his plane when a bodyguard noticed the glint from Deathtoll's gun in a window set to kill Rhodes as he got onto his jet protected. Security enforcers set to kill Deathtoll for his evils, but Deathtoll killed specific guards to absorb their lifeforces to later escape again. As James Rhodes went to Cortena to oversight war crimes and the graves of innocents of said effects, Deathtoll followed Rhodes to the island to fulfill his contract. Upon encountering mass graves of the island, Deathtoll came to battle War Machine for his reluctance to murder which came at a dire end as War Machine used his repulse beams to bury Deathtoll into the ground which lead Deathtoll to rapidly scramble to dig up to the surface but died and became reanimated on every effort due to his death from suffocation in the ground. War Machine suspected Deathtoll dead and buried, but later Deathtoll rose from the grave once more and with only one life to his essence since his revival. Deathtoll has not been seen or mentioned as of his last escape from death.
