So much good in so few pages
A quick trip down memory lane reminded me of the first time Wade Wilson and I ever met. I've had this issue for years now and after stumbling upon this gem while cleaning brought back a lot of fond memories. The year, 1999 it was a beautiful summer afternoon and after buying my issues of Avengers, Thunderbolts and Spider-Man I happen to notice this little gem was free (it was free comic book day too) and not knowing who Deadpool was I figured why not. This issue changed my life and rocked my world. I had never encountered a character quite like Deadpool prior to reading this hilarious masterpiece. Deadpools' wit is sharp as his swords and fast as his trigger finger, I had never seen a character reference the fact they were in a comic book (he actually mentioned there is only 12 pages of story). Deadpool forever changed my view of comic books and left me viewing super-heroes differently. This hilarity and ridiculousness of this issue is unparalleled still to this day. One of the MANY memorable images/dialogue has Deadpool has Deadpool addressing the reader and saying, "grenades...gets the red out," while behind him a person stumbles around with grenades in their eye sockets. I love this issue because it truly defines Deadpool as a joker and badass but doesn't have him dark or gritty (like the Punisher) nor does it paint him as a heartless killer (though killing does make him giddy as a school boy) it just shows us that Deadpool is Deadpool and he is one of a kind.
