No trick photography afoot, here. The book really is that big.
No trick photography afoot, here. The book really is that big.

Last night I had the excellent opportunity to attend a discussion at the UCLA Hammer Museum’s Billy Wilder Theater with three of DC’s biggest names - - Geoff Johns, Jim Lee and Paul Levitz - - that was moderated by notable comics fan, the comedian of comedyPatton Oswalt.  It was truly validating to be there, as the Hammer staff was keen to stress this was part of the museum’s ahead-of-the-curve efforts to recognize comics as an art-form.

While the talk covered some basics that fans such as yourselves are well familiar with, there were still plenty of interesting tidbits. For one, Levitz pointed out that the very first comics published by Marvel and DC were edited by the same man (and he thus compared the two's subsequent symbiotic histories to being like Cain and Abel going out into the world.)

The trio's discussion of how comics have evolved from trash literature to respectable museum topic offered an excellent explanation for why these characters have seemed to perpetually grow in relevancy. Noting how the earliest comics were created by young men who very much made things up as they went along, Levitz suggested that the inherently-infectious youthful enthusiasm behind these characters has always driven their appeal.  Lee added that characters like Batman continue to capture audiences' imaginations today precisely because DC has allowed them to change and encouraged creators to do personal spins on them (rather than binding them to the kind of rigid guidelines that have stagnated other characters created in the same era.)  == TEASER ==

Have you got two hundred bucks and a TON of space on your book shelf?

The event coincided with the release of 75 YEARS OF DC COMICS: THE ART OF MODERN MYTHMAKING, an absolutely enormous coffee table book Levitz recently wrote for Taschen that’s the most comprehensive history ever published about the company. Reportedly the largest book of its kind, the extra large tome is 720 pages long and it includes thousands of rare images from DC's records such as the original inks ofWATCHMEN andDARK KNIGHT RETURNS.  It also weighs 16 lbs and runs for around $200, so it’s a stocking stuffer for the seriously-committed fan who also happen to have cinder-block sized feet.

If you do want to get your hands on this coffee-table-book-that’s-big-enough-to-be-a-coffee-table, this museum-between-two-covers, it's available right on Tachen's website.

I'd love to own this book but it looks impossible to read. I'd have to buy a gym membership just to flip through the pages.

I think I can buy legs separately at ikea and make this into a table, I listened to the meltcast where they went through this book. was pretty cool listening to the making of it and how dc comics literally has a data archive like out of a movie.

here tom hanks is enjoying a bit of literature from the DC archives while one of the librarians tells him how that book was originally put together with mob money and glue sticks.

you know they will re-release it almost immediatly in a smaller size (like the size of their Wednesday Comics book or smaller), and maybe the price will go down drastically.  Hopefully under $100.

$200? Nope. Don't just look at the cover price, check the actual price at retail. Amazon currently has it for $126. That's a huge difference for people who are on the fence because of the price tag.

I spent a good 10-15 minutes leafing through the book for and it's absolutely gorgeous - not to mention rich in written content for those who like their pretty pictures with a healthy side of context and history. ;)

The print and paper quality is worthy of the best art books out there - more than worth the price IMO. The only reason I didn't pick it up right then and there is that my brother is getting it for me this Christmas.

I doubt there's a better book about DC comics (or comics, period) - a book that goes far beyond the comics themselves but gives you a sense of how their place and role in popular culture evolved throughout the decades.

Kudos to the people who crafted this beauty, and kudos to Taschen for consistently producing gorgeous art books at affordable prices.

It's an awesome book as I had to pleasure to hold and flick through a real one but I'm in two minds whether to get it or not.

Should I get it incase it is a one off and never made again and the price tag becomes insane on the secondary market.

Or should I wait and let the price drop down a little or see if the rumours of a cheaper version coming out (which I doubt to be honest) are true.

    lol decisions decisions.

Edit: Who I am kidding lol I'm gonna buy it off amazon right now.

    $200 for   16 lbs of a Book!!?

I'm gonna need 2 tables to read that!

    No thanks.

I'm just gonna wait for the digital "Blu-Ray DVD" version for my HDTV.

By the time the digital copy comes out, DC will probably already be celebrating their 100th.
