The film contains elements related to the novel "The Daughter of Fu Manchu" (1931), a major appearance of Fah Lo Suee. But the production company had not licenced the character and could not use it. Instead the female lead is Princess Ling Moy (Anna May Wong), an illegitimate daughter of Fu.
Today the film is better known for Wong's first major role in a "talkie" (sound film).
The film does not depict Nayland Smith. Instead Fu's opponent is fellow Asian Ah Kee (Sessue Hayakawa).
