Hey everyone. Im back as i said i would. gave myself a title upgrade for my reviews. So i took a break and wanted to try something else outside of the Masters Of The Universe story arcs. some of you people before i started this review said to me. Troy you bollocks sandwich, why are you doing a review on this comic which just came out not too long ago. as they to which i reply while getting out a jar of strawberry smuckers. I only recently came to knowledge of the comics existence and after a good read and the release of the new issue that is out. i would like to do something outside of the normal half naked muscle man. so today we are doing Darkwing Duck: The Duck Knight Returns series.

    The Story

They don't make heroes like that anymore.
They don't make heroes like that anymore.
Right off the hop im going to say. this was not what I expected. the story was well done and really flowed with me, as it has been a long time since i last saw the cartoon or even read a darkwing duck comic back when i used to pick up Dysney adventure magazines. Ian did a great work trying to get the readers back into who is darkwing duck and the format in which his character exists.

So for this first issue we get alot of flash backs and were shown how things used to be for Drake Mallard when he was Darkwing, and the relationship with his best friend and side kick Launchpad McQuack. who the last time i saw him was in reruns of Ducktails. And this is quite a change from the usual Warhammer type series which we get from Boom and Ian. Its amazing we got such a serious writer to work on a series which is nothing more than a disney spoof of Batman.

The story carries on as we learn why Darkwing duck did not return to duty as he sits into his job to help get his daughter gosling into a so called "good" school. which he has a talk with her after wrapping up the principle in his own office. as well as we see a distance that has grown between launchpad and drake. which is not explained.

It picks up again as we learn that Drake works next to his old arch nemesis...sis... Megavolt who just openly admits in the work place that he once gained respect by fear. but isn't that how life is supposed to work? after paranoid questioning and reminding of an old super hero that used to cause him
     Co-workers, i just ignore them.

problems. drake leaves for the day to head back home to his family. we see him sit in his room where his costume is out in plain view in his closet. not that it matters if the neighbors see it or anything.

After a failed attempt to talk to his old friend launch pad the story ends with a non surprising cliffhanger. and Gosling suggests that Darkwing duck is needed. meanwhile an old posse is getting together again and wish to take back an old friend named Megavolt.

    The Pretty Colours

Im not going to spend alot of time on this section. but lets get into what i liked and did not like in this for the art. first off i have to give mad sick props yo.... ill stop that. so ill give bonus stars to James Silvani for practically recreating the old design of Darkwing duck from the cartoon and the comics from the 90's.

The good parts in the comic. the writing humor is well played out by the character designs and the expressions. and the art work is cartoony as it should be. Silvani and he is well known for doing work for other magazine, cards and comics. most of his work look much like toony doodles which he fits in great to this series. so the good for this is that they got a great artist to do darkwing as he should be a cartoon hero and nothing more.
Not forgotten, just wrong identity.  ahh duck-man he will be missed.

The bad parts of the art. there are no real bad parts except that i have to say it is cartoony. for those people whose ideal of art is that of muscles and realistic features then this is not for you art wise. but if your in it for the story then i say go for it. the colours work well.

So over all great art. I don't really have anything negative to say if i did its on small tedious things which does not really matter in my opinion. but if you really wanted me to lace into it i could. but since this is a great piece to try to bring back another favorite toon from the 90's, i saw i welcome this.

    Overall Thought

Well after going over this comic 3 times in a row. i still keep coming back to it which would be a good thing i guess. or maybe suggests i like bright colours. but outside of that. the book is good. Old fans of the cartoons will love this as this is a 4 part series called the Duck Knight Returns. they even said to do a number 5 and make this an ongoing series. if you can. if your bored and looking for something new that is outside of the whole DC / Marvel universe than i would reccomend this to everyone.

Problem with this particular issue this has been a huge setup for this issue. this week #2 comes out. which i was wanting to pick up but got stuck and chose Green Arrow and X-men, i originally wanted to pick up the second part but they were sold out. So

im hoping for the second issue we get straight into the story.

So overall i give the comic a 4 star rating. its great and i would suggest buying for those looking for something new and entertaining. its a fun comic. but unless your a fan you will not be as tempted to pick it up. Its a great spoof on the batman series done by disney and would be a great suggestion for people of all ages to pick up.

Well im off for some Geek gaming of heroclix for the day, have a good night everyone and ill see you next week when ill do my first review of Masters of the Universe Vol 2 #1. Good Journey!

Have you ever felt the urge to "get dangerous" with Darkwing Duck? Fans of the Disney Afternoon show and new readers can get reacquainted with the masked avenger.  The Good As with all BOOM! Kids/Disney books, the art and color are top notch. If you're new to Darkwing Duck like I was (yes, I know it's hard to believe, somehow I just missed it when it aired), you can easily jump into the story and characters. Like the title suggests, Darkwing Duck has been out of action for a bit. Could there pos...
