The first published Guardians of the Galaxy was a team of freedom fighters in the 31st century. The name was later used for the team Star-Lord formed to deal with galactic-level threats in present day. The present day team's name was influenced by a member of the 31st century team who had time traveled to the present.
In an alternate timeline created by the time-traveling manipulations Chronok, Darkhawk became one of the few surviving superheroes on Earth due to be overlooked as a serious threat. Darkhawk and his fellow overlooked heroes managed to undo what Chronok had done and went on to exist as paradoxes in a future timeline.
Chris Powell was an original member of the Loners, having joined the self-help group because of the anger management issues his experiences as Darkhawk had been causing him. Over time, he found himself drawn more and more back to being Darkhawk until it finally drove him to leave the group to be Darkhawk full-time again by working security at Project: PEGASUS. His time on the Loners forged a romantic relationship between him and Turbo. She and a few of the other Loners felt betrayed by his decision to go back to being Darkhawk.
Recruited by Nova in New Warriors (Vol 1) #22
After leaving the Loners, Darkhawk registered and got a job as the chief of security for Project: PEGASUS. He only held this position briefly, but it was long enough to protect the facility during the Skrull invasion.
A group of heroes assembled in differant forms based on the situation. They have been led by Doctor Strange and later Doctor Druid.
The amulet empowering Darkhawk originates with the Fraternity of Raptors, which was an order of assassins and thieves that manipulated events in the universe thousands of years ago. His possession of and ability to use the amulet automatically designated him as a Raptor. This was a fact Chris Powell did not realize for years until he was found by another Raptor, Talon, shortly before the War of Kings.
Darkhawk was a member of a team called the Wolfpack in the House of M reality.
