    Daredevil

Character » Daredevil appears in 4764 issues.

As a child, Matt Murdock was blinded by radioactive waste while trying to save an elderly stranger about to get hit by a truck carrying the dangerous material. In turn, his other senses were heightened to superhuman sharpness and he gained a form of "radar sense". By day, he is a successful trial lawyer; but by night, he guards Hell's Kitchen as Daredevil: the Man Without Fear.

Just read my first Daredevil story

I've liked past Loeb and Sale collaborations so I figured I'd give this a try.

    Daredevil: Yellow

All I can say is WOW. What an interesting character! Prior to this I thought of Daredevil as a homeless man's version of Batman. After I was done, I immediately went to the wiki to see what happened to Karen Page. :(

What other stuff should I be looking at if I'm interested in the character? I hear Waid has had a killer run, but is there something I should read before starting that?

Guardian Devil, Born Again, Man Without Fear, Bendis's run, Brubaker's run and Waid's run were all fantastic. DD is one of Marvel's best characters, and has been written conisntantly well by some pretty great writers.

All these are excellent recommendations, although I would recommend Miller's run as a whole.

Waid's run is a tricky one because it's so different from has been done with the character for decades, which may turn some people off. With that said, from a writing quality standpoint, it's a great read.

Agreed. Personally, I love Waid's take on DD, but I can totally understand why fans would be turned off by it. It's well-written regardless, but if you like your broody Daredevil, this book might not be for you. As far as Miller's entire run, I can't really speak for it, because the only arcs I read from it were Man Without Fear and Born Again.

Indeed, so many great DD stories. Born Again, Kevin Smith's Guardian Devil, and Mark Waid's current run is possibly the best thing going for Marvel right now IMO. I believe it won the Eisner for best series as well this year.

I'm gonna toss in Ann Nocenti's run, was gonna exclude his whole trip to the underworld but think it shows well to. Introduces Typhoid Mary, battles with Sabertooth, Wolverine and Black Panther among many other good showings.

Daredevil: Yellow is imo a very bad starting point for new readers to start reading Daredevil. You have done it, but I wont recomend it for others. I know it is retelling Daredevils first year, but it is done in flashback after the events of Gyardian Devil and spoils a lot of the plot in Guardian Devil. You should read Guardian Devil before Daredevil Yellow and before you read Guardian Dcvil you should read Born Again, This is maybe not the best start, but Born Again is not bad either. The man with out fear is imo the best start. You could pick Season one, this story is imo not very well drawn and the story is very fast told. It is build on the first six Daredevil story where Daredevil has his yellow outfit and these story are barely told or at least told to fast. Other stories you could check out Bendis and Miller's run also the Eccho stories a underrated.

Definitely checkout Bendis's, Brubaker's, and Waid's run in that order.

And for the love of god, avoid Shadowland.

After having recently read Guardian Devil I don't know if I agree with you. DD Yellow really sets up his origin in a modern context and while you can obviously tell that Karen is gone, there isn't really context provided as to how that happened.

So after reading Miller's works and Born Again, I actually didn't foresee Karen's demise happening in Guardian Devil. I knew it would happen eventually, but I had no clue when or how it would happen. Furthermore, I think Yellow made me care more about Karen as a character than anything Miller did with her. Yellow gave us Karen in her pure form before she made mistakes and became super-dependent on Matt for everything. I feel her death in Guardian Devil was more impactful because of what I read in Yellow previously. Might not be the same for everyone, but that's how it was for me.

@reignmaker: I have recently it as well. The thing is if you don't know Karen Page is dead it spoil it and make Guardian Devil kind of pointless. Second if you don't know about Karen Page the whole story seems kind of unimportant. I guess if you do know about Karen but haven't read any DD stories is a fine book. However it is more an add on to the Karen Page/Matt Murdock mythos than an origin book.

Marked for death, Gang and childs Play war is not needed since they are collected in the Frank Miller volumes (and as far as I know OOP). The Bendis and Brubaker TPB are OOP instead they are collected in 3 ultimate collections. Typhoid Mary, Fall of the King PIin and Fall from Grace is OOP. The list by the way lack classic like The Man without Fear by Frank Miller. Redemption by David Hine, Daredevil: Yellow and Battlin Jack Murdcok by Zeb Wells. The list is not ideal by any means. The best way to start is by reading The Man without Fear.

This. The current daredevil is more up beat, but he's every bit the smart, clever, badass lawyer that he's always been. What makes Waid's daredevil so amazing for me is the fact that they took the darker, grittier, daredevil, and completely changed his approach. And to my suprise, its freaking FANTASTIC. Just imagine Batman turned up beat? Sounds horrible right? It just goes to show that talented writers can do anything. And that's why Waid won awards.

If you have the spare cash or can save up, head on over to wikiepedia and look at the Daredevil Collected editions, and literally just collect from the bottom to top. The top stops at shadowland.

Daredevil by Mark Waid Vol. 1 is a technical glitch, ignore that and any others after it:)

    I just read DareDevil: Yellow.....

Wow. Just wow. Such a....profound story.

My first DD story was End of Days, and I also thought it was awesome!

Does Daredevil even HAVE bad stories? I mean, his profound history with his father and him coping with losing so many people in his life...just damn.

If you have any questions regarding Daredevil i'll be more than happy to answer them

I read Guardian Devil and I really really enjoyed it. Should I pick up everything in Bendis' run in the 3 trades? Is any specific issue a good starting point, or should I start with #1?

You can do that but I think you should read the Echo story next

The Echo storyline isn't really needed to understand Bendis run at all. Not that it is a bad read it is great. Vision Guest is also good and fantastic art it close up the story fine but not really that important.

I would pick up the first volume and you will be good. The first story in the trade is not really necessary for the rest of the run it is however a great story. After you are done with Bendis run you can pick up the three Brubaker books he is picking up where bendis left and it is even hard to notice there is a new writer.

It's almost hard to believe that's written by one of the most hated writers Marvel still employs.

    I know right?!!

I actually thought that it would suck because Bendis was writing it. I also thought the exact same for All New Xmen for the same reason. I think Uncanny X-men is also written by Bendis, and if so then I add that to the list to.... I mean, wow. It seems he is stepping his game up....I mean, given that many things that he writes is absolute crap and there will be more to come, but it seems as if he is making progress......maybe he has some twin brother that took his identity >__<

Wait, no. Not Bendis. Jeph Loeb wrote DD Yellow..

EDIT: Wait, were you talking about End of Days? Bendis has always written good DD stories. Also to answer your earlier question, there are actually a few poorly written DD books, not too many though.

@reignmaker: Not really. All you need to know before you read Waids run is that Daredevils life have been... unpleasant, to put it mildly.

I would highly recommend the book, by the way. I cant remember a bad Waid comic, now I think about it.

I know this is of topic, but do you know Underworld Unleashed?

Bendis has as other said always been good DD writer his DD run is acclaim as one of the best ever. Bendis fame started first with Unlimited Spider-man and got even further with Daredevil and later made Avengers into a popular franchise. Anyway back to Daredevil. Personally I'm not a big fan of Waid's DD run. The Andy Diggle run is hatred and is recommend not to read by everybody (haven't read it my self yet). DD wasn't real popular before Frank Miller took over the character in the 80's and was close to cancellation and was bimonthly ongoing. Ann Nocenti's as well as Dennis O'Neil's runs are loved by many fans but not by a broader audience. D. G. Chichester get some respect for his Fall from Grace and Fall of the Kingpin story lines but other than that not many thought it was that good (I have only read the two stories so I don't have an opinion on the subject). The 90's don't have many must read DD issues even thought it have some gems (even som i haven't read yet like Daredevil #-1) however in generally the 90's aren't the best decade for comics.

Hm. I guess that IS true. Frank Miller is the one (I think) that got rid of most of that goofy crap and made him more of a serious hero.

Bendis, Brubaker, & Miller had the best runs.

The Miller stuff is excellent, it's in my top 5 runs of all time. The Bendis stuff is great, but draggy because it's 40-some issues and the storytelling is very expanded, it takes 5 issues to tell a story Miller would tell better in 2, but it's still a very good run and Decalogue was my favorite section of it. The Brubaker stuff is very good, I love the beginning and end especially, but the arc, Crime and Punishment, was awful. I'm only on issue 20 of Waid's run, but it's easily my second favorite after Frank Miller's. It's so clever and well-written, and, in my opinion, it's much closer to Miller's than the Bendis and Brubaker runs. I thought Miller's run was capable of being completely hilarious and Waid has just brought the refreshing comedy back instead of sowing the constant seeds of sorrow. I really don't understand what the hate for Waid's run is about.

I'm kinda new to reading Daredevil, but figured I'd weigh in. My first proper Daredevil story that I read was Man Without Fear, since I was coming off the Netflix show and I was told Man Without Fear was one of the larger influences on the Daredevil narrative. Great stuff, pretty much gave me exactly what I thought Daredevil comics were all about, even if it was a kind of slow burn. Then, just for fun, I went back and read the first 7 issues of the original run. It was kind of fun in that Silver Age way, and it at the very least gave me some semblance of a concept of Karen's involvement in Matt's life before the messed up things that happen in Born Again happen to her. Though it was also occasionally kind of frustrating to read because of how lame the threats were. Electro and Namor are recycled villains from other comics. The Owl hadn't been made into anything cool yet, The Purple Man/Kilgrave had a cool ability, but was kind of underdeveloped at this stage of things, and Mr. Fear is basically just a lamer Scarecrow at this point (Yeah, he did the gas thing first, but it doesn't change the fact that his arc was kinda lame). The Matador story in particular tested my patience with how lame and nonsensical it was, and I think the moment I decided to stop reading Silver Age Daredevil was the moment I saw the cover to issue 8 with Stilt Man on it. It was pretty definitively not what I was looking for. (Though not gonna lie, that Namor fight in issue 7 was great, the Electro issue was alright, and reading 1-6 gave me context for when I eventually read Daredevil Yellow.) After that? I skipped to issue 168, the start of Frank Miller's run as writer (His run as artist began on 158, but I don't really consider that Frank's story at that point.). I had a lot of fun reading his run of the comic, and it was great seeing just how much of it ended up getting into the Netflix show. (It also introduced me to Bullseye, who's now one of my favorite comic book villains because of how awesome his appearances throughout Miller's run are. And I'm going to be so pissed if he's not in Daredevil season 3. Pretty much every issue involving him I considered a highlight of the run.)

I will confess that I did read them all yet. But I wanted to know what I should read, what is worth reading and how many stories that makes.

Not all of these are considered 5 stars stories, but if you want the full picture this is what should be read.
