Daredevil Issue 508 SPOILERS FOR SHADOWLAND
This is the first issue of the actual Daredevil book that I've ever read. That's not to say I don't like Daredevil, let me say that now. In fact, I enjoy him a lot, under the right writer. IN FACT, my favorite comic EVER, is Daredevil: Yellow. After I read that I tried to get into Daredevil, but I guess I over-estimated myself and went back too far in his history and didn't care. So that leads me here, to my first official Daredevil, and all I have to say is.... eh.
The issue begins with Matt's old buddies, Foggy, Dakota, and Becky, watching footage of Bullseye being killed at the hands of Daredevil atop the Javitts Center (See Shadowland 1). From here, they decide to go find Matt and talk to him. Matt is of course, atop Shadowland patrolling and is confronted by White Tiger about how he feels about killing Bullseye finally. He says "There's nothing to discuss." Eventually, after foiling a mugging (And some new-style brutal punishment by Daredevil), Foggy gets to Hell's Kitchen, is intercepted by White Tiger and she gets all angry at him and sends him packing.
This book is actually quite good for what it is. However, I feel like what it is isn't satisfying enough overall. Since Daredevil's story is mainly being told in Shadowlands, his presence here is minimal. That being said though, Andy Diggle does a good job with the writing and manages to make Matt's screen time very strong. The real stand-out of this issue was White Tiger (for me) and I immediately don't like her, don't trust her, and want her to meet her end. That's not to say she's a bad character, but she is written very powerfully as unlikable and untrustworthy and somebody you'd want to meet their end. My problem with this issue though lies in the fact that it declares Bullseye dead after last week's attack. It makes it feel like the Siege: Embedded books where you'd get pulled out of a moment you wanted to be in. I wanted to see more than just the stab and now even if Shadowland 2 touches on that, this book ruined the ending (Mostly). That was disappointing and I don't like when tie-ins do that.
The art in this issue is good, realistic and sketchy, but pleasing to the eye. While not my liking per se, it is good art and I will say that if you like your art realistic and sketchy, all noir-y I guess, than you'll enjoy the art here. A couple splashes stand out in particular, like the thieves punishment and some of the movement of Daredevil throughout is nice. Even the re-drawing of Bullseye getting stabbed is quite nice.
Here's the thing. This is good, don't get me wrong. However I feel like it isn't important enough and the story it tells so far doesn't feel all necessary. I could easily have taken out the Foggy bits and the Detective Kurtz bits and been happier with more White Tiger and Daredevil. I give it a 3.5 as an outsider getting into Daredevil. Hopefully next issue will build on what this started and my score can rise.
