    Blind Date

So now that The Omega Effect is behind us, Daredevil is starting to get back to it's roots. District Attorney Kirsten McDuffie (Who's name will never NOT remind me of the Legendary Dwayne McDuffie) has been sidelined for the recent few issues, but the basis of her side story haven't been resolved. In fact, nor has it really advanced any since it began. But now that Daredevil's Omega Drive problems have been..... oh wait nevermind. Now that Daredevil's Omega Drive problems have overcome their first climax, it's time to put some spotlight on a less action-y story.

So there's three things that have been a core part of McDuffie. She's determined to PROVE Matt Murdock is Daredevil; she's very flirtatious with Matt in a way that's mutual; and..... her name reminds me of Dwayne McDuffie. And so 2/3 of those things collide as she and Matt go on a 'Blind Date.' Where she is blindfolded to experience things through his eyes.

I should also mention real quick that the cover is exactly as unique and outstanding as I've come to expect. Daredevil's got some of the best covers currently out there. And the artist this time isn't either series regular, but now Chris Samnee. I must say, he's certainly a welcome addition to the series. He's not quite the same as Pablo Rivera, but he does a damn fine job; and the different tone of the issue, in addition to the mostly 'one-shot/side-story' nature of the issue; kind of justify the change. When you change artists here and there to obtain a different tone for certain arcs, THAT works, and here is what that is.

Now Daredevil called upon his buddy Spider-Man to 'supervise' his date, seeing as how all the major criminal organizations are still on his tail since HE ACHIEVED NOTHING IN THE OMEGA EFFECT. But the instant we're given that information, we're shown that the person tailing him from the rooftops may be emulating the web-slinger, but is clearly NOT. And it's entirely believable that someone like Daredevil would make that mistake.

And then the rest is a combination of a few adorable comedic-romantic antics, and the telling of how Matt and Foggy became such strong lifelong friends. It's like.... an episode of one of the best Lawyer Comedy shows. So Mark Waid knows how to write Daredevil equally well as a Superhero and a lawyer; AND THAT'S AWESOME. It gives Daredevil EVEN MORE of a hook than he had before. Daredevil already had the unique 'powers' of enhanced sense and blindness; but now there's a focus on the OTHER reason to pick this up over any other series. He's also a LAWYER, and how many other superhero books give you entertaining courtroom shenanigans. It's full of such amazing and powerful emotional stuff that's also FUN.... THAT YOU COMPLETELY FORGET THAT THEY'RE BEING STALKED BY 'NOT-SPIDER-MAN.' UNTIL THE END.

And he didn't even mention that Matt was Daredevil. He threatened him AS MATT MURDOCK. So Matt still has that edge of plausible deniability in front of McDuffie. Though I thought it was lame that he referred to himself as 'Fear Itself.' Yeah, we get it Marvel, you had an event by that name recently. That doesn't change the fact that I have absolutely no interest in it. And there's no context. I mean, if there HADN'T been a recent event, it would've been a fine line, but the fact remains that even if that wasn't the intention, that's going to be the perception.

    In Conclusion: 5/5

Daredevil achieved nothing in The Omega Effect. That doesn't mean TOE was bad. It was STELLAR aside from the lack of fallout. But Mark Waid's determined to keep this series at the top of its game because he delivers yet another grand slam; and yet another grand slam that's completely outside conventional superhero fare. Bravo sir. I'm only regularly buying one book from Marvel. It's Daredevil. It's that damn good.

      The Real DD 0

Daredevil #12 is a perfect example of why Waid's Matt Murdock is as interesting a character as DD. In previous sagas, Murdock's normal concerns are swallowed up by the latest DD crisis of conscience. In this issue, however, we see Matt Murdock in two specifically human struggles. The first is a date with a babe, in this case the beautiful (and also really, really, insensitive?) D.A., and the second is an anecdote from Matt and Foggy's Columbia years. Waid's dialogue is, as always gratifyingly li...

While I haven't been terribly in love with this series as of yet, it has always provided so truly interesting, enjoyable, and human interactions and stories. This issue, however, is really fantastic, as it takes something of a break from the overarching story, and, while this isn't always the best thing, it's a marvelous stand alone issue that delves into Matt's and Foggy's past as our lovable lawyer goes on a date with Kristen McDuffie.I'd rather not give anything away, but this is just loads o...
